Utah CDL Requirements
All CDL holders have to:
- Certify Driving Type, and
- If required, keep a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT card) on file with Utah DMV.
Self-Certification of Driving Type
Your self-certification of driving type tells DMV which medical qualifications you must meet to hold a CDL.
- Non-Excepted Interstate
You must meet the Federal DOT medical certificate requirements and have a Medical Examiner’s Certificate. - Non-Excepted Intrastate (Utah only, requires K Restriction)
You must have a Utah Intrastate Waiver card – “K” Restriction – and a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
You must meet the Utah medical requirements. Applicants must undergo a full physical with a registered medical examiner, submit denied DOT certificates, and meet specific state safety standards. Drivers must request a waiver application after receiving a denied DOT certificate.- Intrastate “K” Restriction
The Utah Medical Waiver Program considers medical conditions in specific categories. For more information see Intrastate Waiver Program. The intrastate only (K) restriction is sufficient to indicate the driver has met the State of Utah medical guidelines for the commercial license. Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate
To obtain and maintain a CDL for non-excepted driving type, you’re required to have a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MCSA-5876) and, if applicable, a valid Utah Intrastate Waiver card.
A DOT physical exam can be administered only by a certified medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.

Once the DOT physical exam is complete, the medical examiner’s office is required to transmit your results to FMCSA’s National Registry database. FMCSA’s automated process transmits your results to Utah DLD to update your CDL Motor Vehicle Record.
Medical Certification Update
You are responsible for knowing when your Medical Examiner’s Certificate will expire. Make sure you get a new DOT physical exam before your medical card expires to ensure that a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate is on file for your CDL Motor Vehicle Record.
If your Motor Vehicle Record shows an expired medical card or no update has been made, your CDL will be downgraded within 60 days.
If the status of your driving condition changes since you submitted a previous CDL Self-Certification, then you must also submit a new Self-Certification form.

Non-CDL Drivers
The electronic reporting requirements do not affect non-CDL drivers.
• The medical examiner must give you a physical MEC Form MCSA-5876.
• You should keep your medical certificate available at all times whilst driving a CMV.
• You will still need to provide a copy of the MEC to the companies you work for.

I don’t have my medical card anymore for my CDL. How do i find out when it expires?

UT drivers license department should be able to answer this question for you.
What if you’re on FMLA which is restricting you from renewing your Medical Card and it expires.
The state of Utah charges a fee to reinstate your license. Do they have a fee waiver?

You need to get your answer from UT. DLD. You have some grace with UT. for renewing your medical certificate. Get the examination done or explain to UT. dld the situation, they should be able to guide you from there.

Yes. Medical certification is national/federal and will be accepted by UT. Check with UT. drivers license department to confirm the need to send it in. They may only need it for a class A driver. But confirm this fact with UT. DLD.
I have in CDL in Idaho so I can operate my own truck with air brakes. I went to Utah to pick up a piece of equipment I had purchased and was stopped at the Perry South Port of Entry (for an hour).I was cited for “no medical card”. I made it clear I was not a commercial driver but she insisted I was still required to have a medical card to enter Utah. Could someone clarify this issue?

Most states require a valid medical card to maintain a valid cdl. Utah is one of those states. No valid medical card, no valid cdl.
Check with your state, but most states require a medical card for any cdl. Any vehicle that is used for commerce, including your own truck, may require a medical card for your cdl. Confirm this with your states drivers license department.
My DOT expired a few days ago. If I get my DOT done and submitted ASAP, will i be okay with my CDL?

In most states you will be fine, just do it ASAP and get it into DLD too.
I have been trying to get in touch with DMV to see what I need to keep my CDL, I am not driving and my medical card will be expiring, I keep getting the response they are too busy and I need to call back again. I tried calling for 2 hours and still no response. What can I do to get my answer?

We believe that UT. requires a valid medical card to maintain a valid cdl. Update your medical card and get a copy to the state DMV/drivers license department and you will be good to go.
I am a current Texas resident and have my cdl class A permit that was issued in Texas, I am currently visiting family in Utah and would like to know if I could complete the driving test here in Utah as a non resident? Thank you
