Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES

MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS

The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.

The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.

ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

I am interested in getting an intrastate CDL but I have a question on something. Can a person who has gone more than a decade without a seizure due to brain surgeries and device implants get a cdl? If one can get a regular license, could one get a CDL?

Most states require a medical card, but each state is different. Check with your local drivers license department for their process and requirements.

Most states require a valid medical card to maintain a valid CDL. Best to check with your local drivers license department for your best answer.

Medical cards expire at midnight of the expiration date, no grace period. Your cdl is state issued and only requires a valid medical card to maintain it. Check with Kansas drivers license department for details regarding your cdl validity.

Yes, because you fall under state variances, not FMCSA, to drive intrastate only.

First ask your boss if they fall under “Excepted” status.
Second – it depends on what status you self-certified with your drivers license department. If you self-certified as “non-excepted” and you do not keep a current medical card on file with your CDL, you will be downgraded.

FMCSA for OTR is one year minimum, but you should check with the state drivers license department for intra-state only driving. It will fall under your specific state variances at this point.

In many states you need to have a medical card to operate any vehicle that is being used for commerce. Especially if it exceeds 10,001 pounds.
So check with your local DLD and see what they say.

You can bring a copy of your Medical Certificate to any customer service rep at any renewal location to have your record updated at that time. Kansas only permits in person certification. I know, I know.
