New Medical Certification Requirements FAQ
Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

I am interested in getting an intrastate CDL but I have a question on something. Can a person who has gone more than a decade without a seizure due to brain surgeries and device implants get a cdl? If one can get a regular license, could one get a CDL?
@ Mark
You will need to get clarification for this situation from your local drivers license department.
Do you need a dot Physical to operate on a CDL permit
@ Matthew
Most states require a medical card, but each state is different. Check with your local drivers license department for their process and requirements.
Do I need to keep a current med card if I’ve been off work unemployed for over a year but I want to keep my cdl?
@ David H
Most states require a valid medical card to maintain a valid CDL. Best to check with your local drivers license department for your best answer.
What if they don’t know either? My husband is now retired but wants to keep his cdl w/all endorsements. He asked our local DL office personnel, and they looked but have no clue.
@ Angela C
Since this is a state related situation, be patient and keep going up the command ladder until someone can answer your question.
I would like to know that also!
Is there a grace period for renewing your dot medical card after expiration date without losing cdl license in kansas?
@ Guillermo
Medical cards expire at midnight of the expiration date, no grace period. Your cdl is state issued and only requires a valid medical card to maintain it. Check with Kansas drivers license department for details regarding your cdl validity.

Good morning,
I am being told that CDL drivers with routes under 50 miles do not need medical card. Is there any documentation that pertains to this?
Thank you
@ Dan S
That may be a state variance, so check with your state drivers license department to confirm.
Is it a federal regulation that a drivers private physician is to turn over medical records to a DOT physician when doing a physical with out the drivers permission?
@ Sandy McC
No. There needs to be a signed records release from the driver.

I work for a truck repair shop. I only drive the trucks when testing after a repair. Do I need a medical card for test driving?
I had a seizure in 2014 and lost my cdl-A. Can I still get a DOT physical so I can drive a cargo van? Many courier companies require a dot physical.
@Doug
Yes, because you fall under state variances, not FMCSA, to drive intrastate only.
Do I have to have a med card for my cdl if I work for a municipality/township.
@Randy
First ask your boss if they fall under “Excepted” status.
Second – it depends on what status you self-certified with your drivers license department. If you self-certified as “non-excepted” and you do not keep a current medical card on file with your CDL, you will be downgraded.
I had a stroke and trying to find out requirements on a time frame my employer said about a year I would be off l would like to know requirements in the state of Kansas to be able to drive again
@Tim
FMCSA for OTR is one year minimum, but you should check with the state drivers license department for intra-state only driving. It will fall under your specific state variances at this point.
I had a Cdl in colorado and was revoked in 2006 as a result of dui. I now have a chance to drive in kansas for elite tours, what will I face and will it show up.
@Hotblooded
This is a question only your local drivers license department can answer. Not a medical certification related question.

Check with your local DLD and ask them. Each state has different rules and regs.
Do I need a dot medical card to drive a cmv in ks without a cdl with a gvwr of less than 14000 lb? The cdl handbook said I don’t need a cdl to drive the vehicle, but it said nothing about if I need a dot medical card or not. No hazmat on vehicle.
@David
In many states you need to have a medical card to operate any vehicle that is being used for commerce. Especially if it exceeds 10,001 pounds.
So check with your local DLD and see what they say.
what is the mailing address to submit the medical card
@Kory
From the information we can find, it seems that Kansas is not accepting mail-in medical certificates.
You can bring a copy of your Medical Certificate to any customer service rep at any renewal location to have your record updated at that time. Kansas only permits in person certification. I know, I know.
