Idaho CDL Requirements

All Idaho CDL holders are required to certify the type of commercial operation they’re engaged in.

Interstate Non-Excepted
You must meet the Federal DOT medical certificate requirements.

Intrastate Non-Excepted
You must meet the Federal DOT medical certificate requirements.

Have a CDL but Not Currently Driving:

If you hold a valid Idaho CDL, but are not actively working, you are not required to maintain a DOT Medical and may certify the driving category as “Excepted Intrastate”. However, should you decide to operate a commercial vehicle again in one of the “non-excepted” categories, you must obtain a current DOT Medical and update your certification by reporting one of the above “actively working” categories before operating a commercial vehicle in a non-excepted category.

CDL Self Certification

All CDL holders must self-certify their commercial vehicle operating category to ITD by July 15, 2013.

Drivers who have not declared a driving category will have CDL privileges withdrawn. It will then be necessary to complete the self-certification process and contact ITD Driver Services at (208) 334-8735 to reinstate Commercial driving privileges.

Online:
https://dmvapps.itd.idaho.gov/cdlselfcertification

In Person:
At any County Driver’s License office.

Important Notice: Submitting Your Medical Card

(Information from Idaho Transportation Department – Currently ITD is unable to collect and process DOT Medical Card information.)

CDL and Commercial permit holders who self-certified in a “non-excepted” category will receive a letter from ITD explaining when and where to submit their DOT medical card.

These letters will be mailed to affected drivers in September, 2013. You should not submit a DOT medical card until notified by ITD to do so. Any DOT Medical card submitted before September will be shredded and will have to be submitted again.

After September, 2013, Commercial license and permit applicants who self-certify in a non-excepted category will be required to submit a copy of their DOT medical card at the county DMV when obtaining a CDL or CLP.

Until further notified, Idaho commercial drivers renewing a DOT Physical should continue to provide copies of their DOT Medical card to the Idaho Transportation Department via the methods outlined in the September letter

Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES

MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS

The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.

The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.

ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

Officially, there is no grace period. Reality, most states are running a bit behind in getting medical card information into their system, so you may have a couple weeks before the state has an issue with it. DOT officers may not be as forgiving.

It will depend on the level or type diabetes you have been diagnosed with. Check with a local CME for guidance.

To my knowledge you take it to your local DMV. That is what the instructions say on my letter telling me to update my medical card.

All depends on the class cdl you carry. Class A interstate, stress test every two years, medical card renewal annually. Lesser class cdl’s fall under your states guidelines and variances. Check with your local DLD.

Most states require a valid medical card for any vehicle that is used for commerce (make money). Check with your local DLD for confirmation.

I’m in Idaho and My medical card was up 4 months ago when I left my last job. Is there a grace period in which I can just go renew my medical card and have my CDL reinstated or do I need to go through the whole process of getting a CDL again.

This question is going to be best answered by your local drivers license department, since it has to do with your cdl.

Most states have a small grace period before you would lose your cdl. Best to get it done ASAP though and get a copy to your local DLD.

So if I have high blood pressure, like 150/110, that disqualify me? I have CDL training in less than a month and if I need to get on meds then I will!

      @ Ross the rookie
Your present blood pressure will pass for no more than 90 days. That means you will receive a one time 90 day card, allowing you to get your bp below 140/90 or lower. Medication may be necessary, if so get started now.
