Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES

MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS

The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.

The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.

ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

So at the clinic, the examiner says that the employer can request that an individual take a blood test for dot physical is that true? And the examiner says you have to read 5 letters from each line to pass the test.

      @ Heather
The company can request it, but you do not have to submit to it. And it is not a part of the DOT/FMCSA protocol or procedures. Eye test is to read the lowest line possible from 20 feet away. Standard eye chart, you need to read a complete line from line 5 and go as low as possible.

Who ever did your medical certification examination does not understand the DOT/FMCSA guidelines and regulations. Your blood pressure needs to be under 140/90 and your medical card should be good for one year at the time. The TIA will require additional information from your cardiologist, but you should be fine. Again medical card good for a year at the time.

What happens if I no longer use my CDL? I took a job that doesn’t require it and the job doesn’t require drug testing so I was thinking about starting marijuana but I would like to know what will happen to my CDL. Also my medical card is expiring, is it ok to just let it expire because I no longer need it?

Most state require a valid medical card to maintain a cdl. And if there is no medical card, then the state down grades your cdl to a standard drivers license. Confirm with your local drivers license department.

If someone’s medical expires do they lose their cdl? and who would they notify that they renewed your medical so that they don’t lose their cdl?

Most states want a copy of your medical card to maintain your cdl. Check with your local DLD for guidance.

My MEC expired 7/27/2024. I am not driving commercially, but want to keep my endorsement. Can I get it re-instated before my DL expires with a new, updated medical exam?

Most likely, most states are a few weeks behind. So get the exam done and get a copy of your medical card to your local DLD ASAP

Most states require a medical card to operate any vehicle that is used in commerce. Not sure about a cdl. Check with your local driver license department for guidance in this situation.
