Pennsylvania CDL DOT Medical Card Requirements
The new Federal regulations also require commercial drivers to self-certify the type of driving in which they operate or expect to operate. Nearly every commercial driver, unless the type of commerce you drive qualifies as ‘Excepted’, is required to submit their valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate to PennDOT.
- Non-Excepted Interstate (NI)
You must meet the Federal DOT medical certificate requirements. - Non-Excepted Intrastate (NA)
You must meet Pennsylvania requirements under Title 67, Chapter 231.
If you are not currently working as a professional driver, and to avoid the loss of the commercial driving designation and the requirement to apply for a learner’s permit, you may self-certify as either “Excepted Interstate” or “Excepted Intrastate” transportation. Making this change to the driving record will automatically disqualify you from operating in any form of non-excepted transportation. If and when your driving type changes, you will be required to resubmit the Self-Certification Form and submit a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
CDL Self-Certification
Submit the following two documents:
- Self-Certification Form (DL-11CD) – download the form here from PennDOT.
- Copy of your valid DOT medical card. (Medical card only, not the long form.) Enlarge the copy to 5 inches by 7 inches, to ensure that all information is legible.

In Person:
At your local PennDOT Driver License Center.
PennDOT will mail you a receipt indicating that the Medical Examiner’s Certification and/or Self-Certification Form has been processed. You should keep this receipt.
Keep your Medical Card Current with PennDOT
If you self-certify “Non-Excepted” (NI or NA) you are required to keep a valid medical card on file with PennDOT. Check your medical card expiration date! If it expires within the next 60 days you should renew it, and get it updated with PennDOT before it expires.
Approximately 90 days prior to the expiration date of your medical certificate, PennDOT will mail you a reminder letter. Approximately 30 days prior to the expiration date of your medical certificate, PennDOT will mail you an official downgrade notice, which emphasizes the date the commercial designation will be removed from your driver license.
A new medical card can be processed at a PennDOT Driver’s License Center as late as the day the current certificate expires to avoid the downgrade process.
Submit a legible copy (enlarge the copy to 5 inches by 7 inches) of your Medical Certificate (medical card only, not the long form) to PennDOT:
By Mail: Only if you are submitting at least 30 days before the due date.

Notice To Medical Examiners
PennDOT notice to medical examiners regarding Medical Examiner’s Certificate
Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

I have a quick question. I live in the state of Pa my medical card expired two days ago but my CDL is not expired and i want to get my medical card on Tuesday to avoid losing it. Do you think its still possible for me to turn in the information? medical card to still keep my CDL?
@ Janear W
Should be no problem. Most states are running slightly behind and not too quick to down grade your cdl. Get it done ASAP though.
Hello. I’ma Full time driver for ups. I renewed my physical DOT card in September 2024. It was taken when my wallet was stolen out of my car. Do I need to retake the physical exam in order to obtain a copy of the card? Or can I apply for a copy of the card so long as it is not expired? I’m not supposed to work without a copy of it so I’d like to figure this out quickly. Please be in touch. Best, thanks.
@ Aaron
Just touch base with the office that did your medical certification examination. Explain your situation and they should be able to provide a copy for you.
Hello I have some question
Well my cdl medical card expired a few months ago and can I apply new one or did i lose my cdl already
Reason why I couldn’t renew my cdl medical card
I was out of the USA
@ Mason
Best to confirm with your local drivers license department. Most likely you did not lose your cdl, but will need a new med card to validate your license again.
Does a class B cdl driver in PA need to carry his Med card while driving?
@ Jonathan B
Each state is a little different and since you fall under your states guidelines and variances, check with your local drivers license department for clarification.
My medical card will expire, my medical exam is scheduled two weeks after the expiration date.. When it expires how do I reinstate it after I get my exam?
@ Jim M
Most states are running a few weeks behind, so you just need to get the medical done and get it to your local DLD asap.
My medical card for CDL expires 2 weeks ago
If I get new one how can I submit new medical card outside the state
For example I am in Maryland right now
@ IIkhom K
You will need to get a copy of your new medical card to the state your cdl is issued from. Contact your states drivers license department for their contact information so you can send a copy to them.
I currently have Cdl but I dont require It at this time-if I wish to retain it do I still have to get a medical card even if I don’t drive a Cdl required vehicle at this time but maybe I win retirement part time
@ Kevin
Most states require a valid medical card to maintain a cdl. Best to confirm with your local DLD.
If the medical dr. Denies your medical card for a year do they notify the state and what if you just go to a different facility and don’t tell them anything and they give you a card what will happen.
@ Tom
Everything depends the class cdl you are carrying.
Where can I find the information for a 2 year medical card with medication for BP and it being under control for multiple years
@ Ray
DOT/FMCSA class A interstate driver, no such thing as a two year with you on blood pressure meds. Lesser class cdl’s fall under the states rules and regs.
I had a hospital stay and my medical card runs out 5/18. I am not sure when I will be released to return to work. I may have to wear a catheter bag for several more weeks. Is there am extension
form to keep me from losing my medical card.
@ Ronald M K
No. Once you are released to return to work, get a medical exam done and take a copy to your state DLD. They will understand your situation, so should not be an issue.
I do not think all of this is possible.
How can 1 person destroy all of that?
There is no way he can know that much about you in a couple minutes of talking to him. (As you clame. ) So I am pretty sure that most of that is your own fault. And not the doctors. Because there is no way he can know all that information about you. If you only talk to him for a couple of minutes, so it is your own fault.
Unless you Whence in talking and telling more information than you even had to.
Can I ask who you were replying to? I’m not quite sure I know
Do church bus drivers in Pennsylvania require a medical exam to get their cdl?
@ marcy
That question will need to be answered by your local drivers license department.
The funny thing is I’ve been given both answers by two different driver’s license departments I’ve been told yes by one and No by the other.
@ marcy
Then ask your local DOT. It is a question of cdl vs church bus driver.
Has anyone ever had a dr, break hippa laws, defame your character, break patient privilege guidelines, give you a psychological evaluation on your mental health. This unqualified doctor is so stuck on himself that he discloses his opinion on a one time meeting for a few minutes, as a diagnosis of my mental state? This one indiscretion has destroyed my life. I lost my job, my CDL license, my regular license. I’ve destroyed my credit, lost standing in the community, on the verge of bankruptcy and losing my home.
@ JC
Sounds like you need a good attorney.
Hello, I am still confused about seizure exemption for intrastate non CDL…does this go just to PA DMV or Federal DOT & who do I specifically contact (at DMV)? Thanks
@ Dee
You are a non cdl holder and in most cases your medical card does not go to anyone. Since you fall under your states guidelines and variances, you will get your best answers from your local DLD/DMV. If your state has issued a standard drivers license, then you should be fine. Do confirm with your local DLD and follow their process.
Has any CDL driver ever been asked for extra verification from PA DOT, regarding their DOT physical?
Good afternoon, I was wondering if a medical card can be submitted via email for certification? If so what is the appropriate email address that we can use?
@ Mary
Check with your local drivers license department (DLD) for guidance.
I had my medical card disqualified for a synope event related to covid. How do I appeal or get my medical card reinstated?
@ Jay
For a class A cdl holder, you will need supporting medical documentation from your cardiologist, along with a medical release form. Then get a new medical cert exam.
I got hired to drive a school van non cdl I have monocular vision in one eye hot denied to pass the physical due to this but I have no restrictions on my dl what do I do to be able to get my physical passed.
@ Yvette
Your medical examiner is holding you to DOT/FMCSA guidelines for a class A cdl holder, which you are not. You fall under your states guidelines and variances, which are more relaxed. Find a medical examiner that know the difference between the two standards. And make sure you explain that you are not a cdl holder, you just need medical card.
have a valid medical marijuana card that was issued because of a knee replacement that I use for pain management. can I still receive and be eligible for a DOT medical certification?
@ James A
Everything will depend on the class cdl you will be going for.
Not a CDL medical certificate!
How do I get a wallet size card?
Jim, If your provider did not issue one, take your certification to a Staples. They will be happy to shrink it down for you for a reasonable fee.
@ Rick
Just make sure a DOT officer or highway patrol can read it at night with the naked eye.
How old do you have to be to get a physical card?
@ Ryan
Just old enough to get a standard drivers license. CDL, you will have to pass the states requirements.
How do I get a seizure exemption to get my DOT medical card. I need it for PA I already contacted the FMCSA and the said that they do not have any jurisdiction I can you tell me who I can contact to help me with this.
@ Debra G
Lots will depend on the class cdl you carry. Class A cdl will be very difficult, but a lesser class cdl or intra-state only may fall under the states requirements and not federal regs.
My friend lost his DOT physical card. He knows it’s due sometime in August, but doesn’t remember when. The reminder 90 days prior accidently got thrown away. Is there a way he can find out when it expires, so he can get the physical prior to that?
@ Karen
Best advice is get it done now.
Call the doctor’s office where he got the last one done, they are required to have it in their files.
If my medical examiner’s certification card is expired because of sleep apnea what are my next steps? I am currently on day 10 of 30 days of using a CPAP machine and then get retested. Do I need to do anything between now and then ?
@ James K
If you were not given a short medical card, then ask the examiner for one while you complete the remainder of the test. Or, if you were given a short card, ask for another while you complete his request.
Is it true that part of the exam is a neck measurement, and if it’s beyond that limit, the driver has to use a CPAP if they snore? Someone told me that last week. Asking for a man that stopped by my church asking for help with rent, he had a CDL, is able to drive, but vaguely remembers the neck measurements. He tried the CPAP, but got less sleep than without it.
@ Rev. AJ S
These are not mandatory according to DOT/FMCSA. The driver has to present with a multitude of symptoms for OSA before a sleep study is requested. Best to get a second opinion from a company that is not in bed with a sleep study facility.
I am trying to get a job as a non CDL truck driver. I had a seizure about a year ago so I wanted to know if I would be able to pass the DOT medical card process. I will be driving only in PA
@ Logan
Since you will not be going for a cdl, then your physical requirements are at the state level and not federal standards. Make sure the medical examiner knows you are NOT a cdl holder. And that he understands the states requirements versus federal DOT/FMCSA.
You have to go to your family doctor and be cleared by them. If you have high blood pressure you need to me medically cleared. And the meds to keep it stable. Heart problems you have to be medically stable and all the paperwork for proof. And you have to do all this crap every year. I just got mine and it’s a pain in the ass!!!!
@ John
Welcome to the fed, we think so also at times.
Hi, i am a driver with cdl and i was just diagnosed with an aneurysm and i wanted to know what is the size limit of an aneurysm for a commercial driver to pass the physical exam required by the DOT in Pennsylvania?
@ Fernando
4 cm and without symptoms and your medical card will be reduced to an annual recertification examination. This is done to monitor your aneurysm data. Greater than 5 cm, starts getting risky and the CME will need additional documentation regarding your well being.
I lost my wallet.
How to I get a replacement Medial Card?
A driver with our company in SC needs to have his medical card non excepted interstate certified. Is there a fax # I can send the required documentation to?
@ JP
You should be able to acquire that information from your local DLD.
My medical card just expired. Do I just need to get another physical and go to a Penn Dot location and present my medical card to get CDL back on my license?
@ Ryan
Most likely, but confirm with your local DLD.
I had a vehicle inspection report done I drive a non-commercial vehicle and the officer stated that I needed a valid medical certificate. When I went to take the physical I passed it and then the office manager came in and said because I have a probationary work license I’m not eligible to get the medical certificate this doesn’t seem accurate and I’m looking for information to say that I should be able to get the certificate again I’m non-commercial?
@ michael N c
The examiner is trying to hold you to a federal DOT/FMCSA drivers standard. You fall under the states guidelines and variances. Check with your states drivers license department and let the medical examiner know they may be in the wrong.
Our company does interstate commerce so we are required to have a USDOT number and medical exam certs, we do not have any vehicles big enought to require a CCL. Do we need to submit the medical cards to PennDot?
@ Martha L
Since none of your drivers is required to have a cdl, then most states do not want a medical cert on file. That being said, confirm this with your local (DLD) drivers license department since it will be their ruling not federal.
I have class b and motorcycle have not gotten medical exam in long time no longer drive truck how do i get pa.to transfer non cdl and motorcycle to jersey
@ Al A
This question will be best answered by your local DLD.
Hello! We are trying to hire someone with a non-excepted intrastate CDL Medical Self-Certification. His medical certification about 6 years ago. If we have him complete a DOT physical, is that enough to get his medical certification renewed? Then does he send those results to your team to update his Self-Certification? State is PA.
@ Danielle
You will need to check with the state that his license is issued. If it’s been six years since his last medical cert, then his cdl may have been downgraded. Either way the DLD should be able to guide you through their process for this situation.
This is not for me. A dot physical. OK. But dot doctor and this sleep study. Is to much. And can’t afford . The test and machine if so all
a ponzie scheme. driven over 3 million miles. But don’t matter. It’s all about drivers license and check book. 30 plus years. And now this. No thanks.
@ T
If you do not feel that you present with signs and symptoms of OSA, then go get a second opinion.
How do I find out if my card expired, I lost my card and I’m not in PA. And I will be gone for a month
@ Brandon H
You should be able to contact your PA drivers license department and ask about your medical card expiration date.
I have an ICD since 2016. I’m a delivery driver in PA and drive a step Van. The company requires me to have a medical card. I have been getting my medical card renewed every year now for the last 5 years I went today to renew it and the dr said she couldn’t do it, and she is the one that cleared me last year. Is there anything I could do since I am not driving a commercial vehicle?
@ Mike
It seems the examiner is holding you to a class A cdl standard, which you are not. Find an examiner that knows the difference between federal regulations and your states requirements.
I just faxed a replacement medical card to y’all. How long before it is received and updated within the system?
@ Mike
You will need to check with your local drivers license department for the answer.
What happens in PA if you are downgraded because you left you medical card expire. Can you get a new one and get it in and get back to driving, retest? This person had a CDL prior to the new laws stating you have to go to truck driving school.
I’m looking into getting my CDL license myself can anyone please let me know how to get a new medical card. Do I get that before I go to DMV or do I have to go to DMV first.
@ Alec s
Check with your local drivers license department to confirm their process.
I work for the Department of Transportation, PennDOT, are there any regulations permitting me to be exempt from having to get this physical? I’m not engaged in interstate/intrastate commerce and we have individuals who are exempt from requiring the physical only because they were “grandfathered” out of it.
@ Adam L
You will need to check with your local drivers license department for the best answer to this question.
Is there a fee when you take your DOT medical certificate to DMV to be updated on your license?
@ Ben
Confirm this with your local drivers license department.
I just did mine and was NOT charged a fee for updating
Iff the DOT regs. were like they were promised when they first started, the same for every state, there wouldn’t be all these problems When Ted Kennedy proposed the CDL license ,all dot regs, were to be the same.
In Pennsylvania my medical card expired because I thought I had 90 days to get it renewed but it was only 60 days. My new license even though it was downgraded it still has class A wanted but it only says DL not CDL. My license will expire in a year is it possible if I get my medical certificate again that they will upgrade my license back to a CDL a without taking any tests ?
@ BP
Most likely, but with each state having different requirements and guidelines, it is best to confirm with your local drivers license department.
How can you have an A and a DL? My son probably will be downgraded too even though his license doesn’t say that yet because he was late too. Can you get it upgraded in PA when you get your medical card done or do you have to retest? Anyone know the laws because Pendot doesn’t seem to know when I ask either.
@ Melissa
Most states, considering lockdowns and pandemic, are being pretty lenient at the moment. If you go into your local drivers license department with a new medical card in hand, you might just fly under the radar. Do it ASAP.
One more question. His CDLB says valid, downgrade has nothing after it. His medical card says not registered. Does he still look good? Pulled his license in for for him.
@ Melissa
Since he is a class B cdl holder, all he should need at this point is a valid medical card. Gat it done, take it with you and you should be OK.
taking blood pressure medication, but my blood pressure is controlled, taking minimum dossage,why can i not get my 2 year license, only a one year. have had blood pressure issue for the last ten years. this is a new question to you. plus they wanted me to get sleep apnea study, my doctor said i did not need this.
@ Frank r
DOT/FMCSA has always had a policy of one year medical cards for any one on bp medications. As far as the sleep study, DOT/FMCSA has not passed any requirements for this, unless you show multiple symptoms. So go some where else and get a second opinion for the sleep study requirement. But one year only due to bp meds, that DOT/FMCSA.
I went to get a pre employment physical for a new job and they gave me a dot physical also. I have had my cdl for 10 yrs and I just renewed my med card back in October. Now this doctor says he will only renew my med card for 3 months because he wants me to take a sleep apnea test. My med card I got in October was good for a year now I have 3 months to get this test done and figure it out. It’s bullshit because dot does not require by law but this doctor has the power to make me do it. Can they make me do this?
@ Joseph
Unless you have a multitude of symptoms that would require a sleep study, then someone is trying to take advantage of a situation. I would go else where and get a second opinion, which will over-ride this 3 month medical card.
My son went to a minute clinic outside of Philadelphia, CDL class A earned in 2020, Concentra ADHD med previously taken 2019 and earlier, previous depression med 2015, both on his medical records but didn’t block him from earning CDL. He paid $115 and Physician Asst blocked medical recertification, took his money, referred him to a Primary dr who isnt available for weeks. Deadline was this week. She wants approval letter from Primary and for him to come back and pay $30 to collect more money. Needless to say, Philadelphia DOT removed medical cert from record. This is ridiculous and the meds he took before earning his CDL are not on the list blocked for drivers to take. I want this case reviewed and do not know where to turn.
@ Tammy
The deadline for his card was extended to the end of February. Go else where for a second opinion. Request review of case, FMCSA website.
Does the medical examiners certificate need to be 5 x 7 or is a full sized 8 x 11 ok?
@ Keith G
As long as the DOT officer can read everything on the form, you should be OK.
When do I need a DOT medical card? The company I work for has a f350 dually. We are not pulling a trailer with this truck. Just using it to fit everyone into. Do I still need a DOT medical card? This vehicle does not leave the state of PA.
@ Mike L
Since you are not a class A driver, then it falls into the states requirements. If the vehicle has a business attached to it, then the state may require a medical card. Confirm this with your local drivers license department.
My medical card has expired because I was on work comp. Can I just go and get a DOT physical to renew, or is it harder because it has expired?
@ Gary
Most cases, just get a new medical card and get it into your local drivers license department.
is there a special form you need to fill out to send to harrisburg, to let them no you are on workmans comp, and your physical card has expired
@ Benedette a T
You will need to check with Pennsylvania drivers license department for your answer.
My husband just went for his DOT physical and they gave him a 3 month card now has to get a sleep study. The company wont hire him with a 3 month card. Has anyone ever had this done? What happens if he passes or wouldn’t pass.
@ Sarah
DOT/FMCSA does not require a mandated sleep study, unless there are a multitude of signs and symptoms. Go get a second opinion somewhere else.
Does an Initial DOT need a urine drug screen?
@ BrigG
No, only a urine screen for blood, sugar and protein.
Can the Dot medical card renewal urine analysis in pa give false positives in the drug screening , I take ibuprofen n small dose of sertraline for depression it’s concerns me my card needs renewed soon
@ Mickey
DOT physical does not test for drugs. Only sugar, protein, and blood are recorded.
You shouldn’t be driving if you have to ask that question .
@ Steve
We agree.
Two years ago my company failed to send in my DOT physical card so I was driving without my CDL and I did not know that until I got pulled into a weigh station. I presented my card to the officer who did not fine me but put me out of service. Now I’m trying to get new employment and this is causing me to find it very hard to get a new job because of this on my PSP. Is there a way to get this removed?
@ Charles H
Not sure which direction to point you in. Start with your state and explain your situation, they may be of help.
I had a DOT CDL physical today and need a fax number in Pennsylvania to fax it to so I can renew my CDL so it doesn’t expire
@ BARB
You’ll need to contact Penn DLD for the fax #.
I see a lot of questions in reference to an expired medical card and whether or not the testing will need to be retaken but no clear answers. Just wondering, if my medical card expired 2 weeks ago in PA, will I need to retest for the CDL or can I just go get my Physical and submit my medical certificate to PennDOT and be done with it?
I’m in the same boat and cant find an answer. I believe we have to start over tho
@ Rob
Guys, you need to check with your local drivers license department for the best answer. Requirements vary from state to state. Some state only need a new medical card, other require, after a certain time period, you retake the cdl examination again. Your state drivers license department can answer your questions.
@ Matt
Check with your local drivers license department for the answer to your question. It’s a state driven question, not federal FMCSA.
I currently have a F-350 with a 13,100 GVW and tow a 7,000 GVW trailer so as of now I need my PA DOT Medical card (Which I do have for 14 more months)
If my future new F-350 is only rated at 10,000 GVW I will be exempt from needing to renew my PA medical card correct? (10k truck and 7k trailer = 17k,……under the 17,001 threshold)
Or will I still need one because my truck is still 10k alone? I believe the truck alone has to be over 10k (10,001 and above) but want to be sure.
And lastly, I never drive intrastate with my trailer unless going to my supplier/dealer, but I assume I will be in violation since I am over 10k,…either way, alone or with my trailer, correct?
CORRECTION!!!!!
I never drive interstate! Only stay in PA unless I go to my local parts supplier who is in NJ
@ CJ
Everything will depend on the class drivers license you carry. Each states cdl/medical card requirements are different. Start with information from the states drivers license department. They should be able to clarify the situation for you. Class A medical cards are state issued and federally regulated, unless it’s intra-state only.
I have a standard PA class C license, no CDL involved. My question basically is, is do I still need a medical card if my new truck only has a 10,000GVW rating?
I understand that I will be under the 170001k with my 7k trailer (truck 10K + trailer 7K = 17K) so in theory I will no longer be required to get the PA medical card,…
but I am more concerned with the truck alone since it is still 10k .
But if I am correct I still will not need it because my truck is under the 10,001k threshold at 10k even.
Or is it 10k threshold?
Long story short,…at what GVW do you need a PA medical card for truck only,….maybe that explains it better?!! LOL
Thanks!
@ CJ
Your question will be best answered by your states drivers license department. You fall under their variances not FMCSA/DOT.
It is possible to put your CDL on hold when renewing a license. I am retired and do not plan to drive, but don’t want to give it up. How do I do that?
@ Marvin M
Check with your state drivers license department to confirm, but most states require a valid medical card to maintain a valid cdl.
why was I not able to get my medical cert for my DOT while being on methadone?
I was issued my card last year 2018 and now no provider will renew it due to being on the methadone even though I passed the urine test and have document from my clinic stating I am able to preform the duties needed. is there any policies about methadone?
My husband needs to register his medial card with Penn Dot. Can I do for him in person at a dmv or does he have to be there?
@ eliza
Check with your local DLD for the best answer.
My employer provided a packet to be filled out for a non cdl dot certification in PA. Required questions were: How long have I lived at my address (years & months), and to list my employment for the last three years. Is this a requirement for a non cdl dot certification? Not sure what these questions have to do with a DOT Certification to pull a trailer….
@ David
Those are not DOT questions.
On the back of my license it say Class A. I used to have a Class A CDL. Niw I have an operators license. So, my question is what do I have to do to get my CDL back.
@ Jeffrey S G
Check with your states drivers license department for the best answer.
I was told to get a sleep Apnapa study for a non CDL med card. They said anyone Male over 42 with a neck size of 17 inches was required. Is this true?
@ andy c
No, someone just wants to make a lot of money off you. Go elsewhere and explain that your a non cdl driver and do not fall under the FMCSA guidelines.
What happens if I get a citation for not having my paper copy medical card on me when I get pulled over? Can I provide this to them at a later date or is there no way out of this citation?
@ Shawn R
Most states just need to see a copy of the paperwork. Check with your state DLD for the best answer.
Yes. I was wondering how much it will cost me to take a hazmat test. I do have my CDl class B license and eventually I would like to take the necessary exams and preinspection/driving tests to operate a class 26001 # truck. I was told at the local DMV office I could renew my current Class B license and take the initial general knowledge test for just $15 (+/-). That seems very inexpensive. Did I hear the licensing staff worker right?
Thanks
What medications will disqualify someone from receiving their med-card in pennsylvania?
i live in pa if i would need to drive a truck that does not need a cdl and i only drive in the state of pa. is a medical card needed also if i drive a truck that needs a cdl only in the state of pa is a medical card needed thanks don
@ donald w p
Most states have adopted the FMCSA guidelines and exam. But check with your local DLD for the best answer.
What can I do if I failed the PA dot physical for high blood pressure ?
@ Jennifer G
If you are class A driver, then the CME may provide a one time short term medical card for you to go and get your bp down. Either way it needs to come down. Set an appointment with your primary care physician to evaluate your situation and set a plan in motion.
I was going to ask the same question what does your blood pressure have to be for you to pass
@ Shawn c
Below 140 / 90.
is there an PA DOT PHYSICAL exsemption for a driver who only drives a vehicle gvw 10100 but less then 24000 IF they only drive vehicle 3 or 4 times a year
@ Mike K
You will need to check with your local drivers license department for the best answer here.
In Pennsylvania, do I have to carry my physical card to drive my car legally?
@ Robert S
Most states require you to, but check with your states DLD for the best answer.
I did not renew my DOT physical several years ago. My license, including my brand new one still says class AM driver standing for class A commercial driving and M motorcycle. I’m confused. Shouldn’t it say class CM now? The CDL stamp is gone but the class remains the same. Am I legal to drive commercial or could I be if I renewed my DOT physical?
@ Rebecca
In your case it looks like you could re-new your medical card and drive class A. Check it out with your local drivers license department.
My son just took a dot for pa and they asked if he has done any drugs in the last 3 years and being honest he is only 22 and he checked yes because he did smoke a little marijuana like 2 years ago and hasn’t smoked since so what happens know they want him to see a drug consoler can he still get his dot card
Thank you
Dumbfounded
@ Bill e
If your son is no longer a consumer of marijuana and has not done so for over two years, then the request for a drug abuse consoler intervention is a bit harsh. If the DOT examination is for a class A, OTR type driving, he will be drug tested by his employer and his information then is federal rules and regulations. If his examination is for a local job, the employer is still going to have him drug tested, but does not meet the same level federal standards.
So the DOT physical does not test for drugs? Only for cdl drivers?
@ Brandon S
All CDL drivers are drug tested by DOT and their employers. It is not a part of the DOT physical.
I have a implanted cardiac defibrillator. With NO history of black outs or any such thing. Is a cardiac device an automatic disqualification for a med card.
My brother-in-law has been a PA cdl licensed driver for many years. He went for his medical exam to renew his license which will expire on 10/8/17 this week. The medical examiner failed him because he listed Metformin in his drug list. He is pre-diabetic, and the drug (which he has been using for over 7 years) is to prevent diabetes, not to treat an existing condition. His doctor needs to complete a form to verify this information but so far he has not been able to find the time to handle it. My sister and brother-in-law are extremely anxious that he will not have sufficient time to get this taken care of and will not be able to work. Is there someone he should talk with in addition to prodding the doctor to complete the paperwork to verify that he is not diabetic?
Thank you
Do I just need to go to my PCP for a Non-CDL medical card? I have been told conflicting information. Does the physical exam vary from the CDL to Non-CDL or is it the same thing?
@Chris
A non CDL medical examination is the same as for a CDL driver, but the examiner should understand the type of driving you do and take that into consideration. Your state may allow you to get a medical card through your PCP. You want to be sure of this – ask your local DLD – or go to a certified medical examiner to be sure.
If I am on seizure medication and have been seizure free for over 18 months and I am cleared to drive my personal vehicle will I be able to get a PA ODT medical card?
@JJ
You’ll need to check with your local drivers license department to know what their time frame and guidelines are.
I had my cdl for 27 years. I was in a motorcycle accident and couldn’t renew dot medical card. Now they are saying I have to take tests all over again like a brand new driver. Is there anyway around this? Its absurd. I had a broken leg and multiple surgeries. No legal issues involved.
@Dustin
We’re guessing that the problem is that your medical card on file with your local drivers license department expired. DLD automatically downgrades or suspends your drivers license if your medical card expires. You may have been able to help this process if you had contacted DLD up front to explain that you were going to need multiple surgeries and would not be able to get a medical card for some time.
Best bet is to find someone at DLD to whom you can explain your situation. If you now have a current medical card which demonstrates that you are medically fit to drive again, they may consider reinstating your license for a fee and without testing. This all depends on how long you have been off the road. Each states treats the timing and the process differently, so only someone at your local DLD can give you a definitive answer. Good luck.

Do I need a CDL license to drive a commercial vehicle with a GVW of 14,500?
Do I need a DOT number and required to pass a physical?
Im a non cdl driver and got my medical card. Do i still have to send in tje DL form to harrisburgh or is it only for CDL drivers. I live in Pennsylvania
@David
Straight from PennDOT’s website …
“I am not required to have a CDL; however, I am required to carry a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Physical Card). Do I need to submit a copy to PennDOT?
No. Only CDL holders that operate in “Non-excepted” transportation are required to submit a copy to PennDOT.”
Is the Medical exam required for a hospital employee driving a hospital owned vehicle (over 17,000 lb GVW) for hospital business such as hauling, plowing ? this is not a commercial entity for profit. The employees do have a class C PA license.
@Michael
In this case your driver does not fall under FMCSA, but falls into your states CDL variances. You should check with your local drivers license department to get the most appropriate answer.
If my CDL got downgraded in PA How can I get it restored?
If I live in NJ can I get a Pa CDL license because I work in pa?
PA Dot never registered my mailed in certification, never notified me, and today sent me a non- cdl license in the mail. No warning notice. I sent it in 45 days prior to expiration.
I will go in person on Tuesday to walk it through, hoping they reinstate my CDL. I will lose a day of work (Monday) due to their inefficiency.
I did everything right and allowed lots of extra time, yet Harrisburg managed to screw it up. Amazing.
My husband is going through the same exact problem today. The letter he got from pendot stated the 25th of march everything had to be in by that date. He got his med card yesterday and dropped everything off at pendot today and they told him he lost his cdl. So now he has to take a day off work tomorrow to fight it since it’s there fault not his.
Just wondering how your husband made out with the DMV. Same thing just happened to my husband. He just received a letter today saying they downgraded and issued him a non commercial drivers license.
Will i have to pass a drug test in order to receive a medical card?
@Ryan
If you are getting ready to get a job, yes there will be a pre-employment drug screen.
The DOT physical exam for a medical card is a separate exam from a drug test.
If you are concerned about drug tests, maybe you should not consider driving for a career.
So if you already passed a pre employment drug screen they won’t test you as you go to take the physical?
@Anonymous
The pre-employment drug screen and the DOT physical are two different tests.
You may be randomly drug tested at any time.
I submitted my new DOT Card via fax by my company on 13 December. What is approx date the system will be updated?
my cdl in pa was downgraded in may of 2014 and i self certified as non-excepted intrastate before it was downgraded. if i wanted to use my cdl again can i just go get a medical card and send in a self certification form.
@Matt
You’ll need to contact your local drivers license department. They are the only ones who can tell you what your status is, and what you need to do next to get your CDL re-instated.
I was injured while operating a propane delivery truck in April 2016. Was undergoing care by the company acquired physician who was subsequently fired after placing me on work restrictions that included no operating company vehicle. Notifying both my employer and the ex-physician of my expiration date, both cited some DOT regs that allowed for a waiver every 30 days after the Medical card expired The ex-physician and the staff of a regulated DOT medical center all cited, that until I was either treated and released, or was presented with a Medical certificate for limited driving of a CMV , then it would be a waste of $80 to simply be failed. Employer was notified and verified everything and the day my medical card did expire, I signed and he was to fax this medical card waiver to the PA DMV , U.S.DOT and the company safety director. I had since signed and filed 2 others. The last was to expire on Oct 1. 2016. On October 3, still not treated and released I was terminated without cause. Today I was informed that although my CDL-A is valid until 9/2019 that since no notice was made to PennDOT /DMV within 30 days , then I’d have to re-apply for the entire CDL-A process all over again..including the classroom , exams and driving test with a rented T/T. This as told to me by PA DMV today, sounds quite odd. Should i simply appear at the local Driver’s License center and present all the documentation –including the award from the Md Workers Comp Board, citing the case and the pending surgical repairs ?
@Daniel
You need to go to the state drivers license department and explain your situation. If you are injured and can not pass the class A drivers examination as ‘Fit for Duty’, then the state should be able to hold your class A license in suspension until further notice. So check with the local DLD office and see what they have to say.
Due to a vehicle accident I am temporarily (hopefully) disabled. It is time for me to renew my medical card. What can I do so that I do not have to lose my cdl?
I am not driving now due to my disability, but hope to in the future.
@Jamie
You’ll need to check with you local drivers license department to see what they can do to put your CDL on hold.
I mailed and also faxed my dot physical card into Pennsylvania and received the fax notice it was received should expect a new license or do they just upgrade the status off my new physical in the system
@Lawrence
They just renew the status of your medical card on file with your license in the system.
I submitted my new DOT Card via fax on 13 December. What is approx date the system will be updated?
None of my company vehicles require a CDL license. Are my employees still required to have a drivers physical every year. I’ve been told yes and no.
@Doug
If your vehicles are being using for commerce, the driver must maintain a valid medical card. Medical cards may be valid for up to 2 years, but could be shorter depending on health conditions.
I put wrong address on med card put my mailing address by force habit pa downgraded cdl to operator lic without warning i sent new one cant believe an address made lose tld me take 5 days to fix not happy been drivin 18 yrs no points on license or csa
Do CDL exempt farm drivers need to have a medical card?
@Tom
You don’t need a medical card if you fall in the ‘excepted’ category.
Would my Pennsylvania CDL and medical card cover me for driving in other states with a Pennsylvania employer
@Todd
Only if you have been certified for “interstate”.
“Intrastate only” restricts you to within the state where you are licensed.
I have been diagnose with glaucoma in both eyes and am being treated with drops before I go too bed but my vision is still 20/20 in both eyes corrected with glasse as I have always worn is this ok too pass a dot physical I also have mild floaters which been going away gradually
@Lawrence
Make sure you take medical release form from your doctor explaining your situation. Since you correct at the time, you should be OK, for now. This is a gradual progressive condition and will need to be monitored until treatment has been discontinued.
I have white-coat syndrome. Every time anyone takes my blood pressure or even talks about my blood pressure it makes me worry which drives it up. When I have it taken under non-stress circumstances, it’s fine. My EKG checked out OK, I am healthy and I have an excellent driving record.
I am now faced with losing my job because my “registering” blood pressure will not allow me to pass the DOT Physical. What can I do? Is there a more extensive and complete physical I can have that would clearly show that I’m healthy enough to work?
@NM
Here are some tips that may help with white coat syndrome.
We are a Delaware company, incorporated in this state. There is not a requirement for a medical card, while driving a truck in Delaware. Nor are there any certified doctors or DOT facilities in Delaware that issue these cards.However, the State of Pennsylvania and the State of Maryland require medical cards. Our drivers travel to both states to pick up plants.
Where can we go to get these cards? Will one medical card be enough for both Delaware and Maryland? Could our drivers be exempt from having a medical card?
Thank you,
Marye
@MaryE
No your drivers cannot be exempt.
One medical card is enough – it will be an “interstate” medical card. It is basically the same DOT medical exam for interstate or intrastate and you can use a medical examiner in any state.
I live in PA and just had my DOT physical done. They now give me a full half page size card to prove I’ve had the physical and passed. In the past it was a wallet sized card. Another driver has told me that since the physical is registered I don’t have to carry the card anymore but I’m concerned that I didn’t see that anywhere in the forms I filled out and don’t want to be caught without it if it’s still required. So that’s the question: is it still a requirement to carry the card with me since the FMCSA has a copy registered? I have received a letter stating that they have it and it’s good.
Thank you.
@Jeff
There are 2 levels of information you need to be wary of:
Federal Information: The medical examiner inputs the new medical examination/card information online, for the Federal database.
State Information: It is the drivers responsibility to submit a copy of the new medical card to their local drivers license department to be updated with their drivers license and self-certification.
The new medical certification forms are now half page size and cannot be reduced to wallet size as were the old forms.
Yes, to be safe and avoid hassles on the road you should carry your medical card with you while you are driving. Not all states are up to speed with the online information, and the deadline for all states to be up to speed is only mid-2018. So best to have your card with you.
My husband was unable to pass his CDL physical due to a heart condition. He is taking a new medication and tests can be repeated in 3 months. In the meantime his CDL has been downgraded to a regular drivers license. If he can pass his physical in 3 months, will his CDL be re-instated?
We live in PA.
@Melody
You’ll need to contact your local drivers license department with this question. Each state treats this process differently, and you’ll want to get the answer “straight from the horse’s mouth”. Then you’ll know how to plan ahead.
Will my father-in-law lose his Pa Driver’s license if he gives up his CDL due to sleep apnea restriction?
@ Chris
Most likely not his drivers license, cdl will have new requirements. For drivers licensing questions check with your states drivers license department.
Why do I need nuclear stress test every year ? My heart Doctor said no? I get regular test every 6 months. And every 2 yrs nuclear stress done. But now my other Doctor says. Every year.
@Dan
Once every two years is all you need for FMCSA.
If I’m on disability for a workers comp claim for a knee injury, is there any way to postpone my license renewal until I can get cleared to drive rather than it just expiring and me having to start from square one with licensing and whatnot?
my medical examiners certificate has expired. how do i reinstate it
@ edward
You go take a new medical examination and pass it.
Do I still have to self certify my medical card in 2016, every year I gotten a notice 3 months prior to mine expiring however this year I didn’t receive one. Thank You
@ Richard w B
It’s a state thing and most states that we know of are requesting a new self-certification each time you get a new medical certificate. Check with your local drivers license department for confirmation.
Hello,
I just got back from the cme and he said that I would need a special performance evaluation( due to a past broken arm and my movement is impaired a little)I’ve been calling around and the Pittsburgh Pa area and nobody either knows what it is or they automatically say no? I was just wondering if you now anything about the spe and where to get this this done at. It says it has to be done by a board certified physiatrist. I don’t know what that means either? Thank you
@Virgil
You’re looking for a skills performance evaluation to be done by a certified physician that deals with restricted mobility in an extremity. Your state drivers license department should have a list of qualified doctors that do these tests.
My husband has his CDL AND his medical card which he has to have done every year he no longer drives but itdoesn’t want to give up his CDL is there an extension for the medical card if do not currently driving large truck
@Donna
There is no such thing as an extension for a medical card.
1. He can continue to renew his medical card by getting the physical done; OR
2. Contact your local drivers license department to see if they will allow him to self-certify in an “Excepted” category; OR
3. Contact driver license department to downgrade his license.
Howdy,
I just wanted to ask about passing the DOT Physical.
In early February I failed because I have a mild case of cerebral palsy on my left upper limb. The medical examiner said that I needed a special medical clearance through an orthopedist or something around there. He said everything was online and I really can’t find documents.
I will be receiving treatment through botox which releases the spastic muscles and the doctor told me that I should be capable of trucking since I already drive a manual. He told me if I find the proper documents he’ll sign off. Which I don’t know what papers I need and so forth. I do appreciate your help with this issue.
I’m very lost. Any help would be great, I’m ready to get on the road. Thanks.
Bryan
@Bryan
Lots of questions before answers. A lot will depend on what type of driving you want to get involved with.
If it is driving intra-state, then you will need to check with your local drivers license department. They will have the answers that you are looking for.
If you are looking at getting into the interstate long haul stuff, then you will need information from the FMCSA. Just check on the FMCSA website and look for what type of waiver you will need. Your CME should be able to guide you in the right direction.
Is a physical examination certificate the same as a medical examiner’s certificate?
@Teresa
Yes it is.
My son is 16 with a Jr licence. Can he get a DOT physical for trucks 17000 to 26000 GVW intrastate only in PA. His licence states he can drive vehicles up to 26000 . We were refused a physical because he was under 18 years old. Is this correct ?
@Jay
You will need to check with your local drivers license department. This one is a state related issue. If he can drive and the vehicle he is driving requires a medical certificate, then make sure that the examiner is aware that your state allows for your circumstances.
I’m due for my dot physical and my question is, last year I had to have a nuclear stress test.I had bypass surgery in May 2000. I was told, or understood, I would not have to take another stress test if it was within a year! I’m told now I have to do again! Insurance will not cover this because it is work related, not medically needed. My cardiologist says it is not needed, dot physician says it is. This costs $8,000 for the test, (I did not have ins. last year!) let alone putting that chemical in my system again! Can you please tell me what is necessary?
@Jerry
Stress test (not an $8,000 test) for bypass surgery is to be done every two years, according to the FMCSA. Not sure what else may be going on that a CME is making an additional test request, or they are not reading the FMCSA guides.
I work for a Pipeline company and have to renew my medical examiners card. When I started this job 2 yrs ago I just renewed my cdl examination. Now they are both due for renewal. A cdl is not required for what I do at my new job but I would like to keep my cdl. Can the 2 medical examinations be combined for one card?
@Ty
The medical certificate examination is one thing and the CDL examination is something different. Since they are not the same examination then you may not be able to combine the two for one thing. But check with your local NRCME examiner and ask him. Each state is a little different, so your state may be able to do so.
If my dot card expired last November did they take my cdl
@James
If your CDL was downgraded you should have received a letter from your state drivers license department. You’ll need to contact them to determine your status.
Volunteer firefighters are exempt from a cdl license to operate fire apparatus in Pennsylvania by law. But I am unable to find any information on if you still need a medical card to operate the vehicle? My guess, is because you are operating a vehicle over your class c license, and you still must obey the cdl rules do to the weight over 26,000, that you are liable to get a ticket for not having a valid medical card.
Our company has a F550 truck and trailer the total combined weight is 26,000 lbs. I have a CDL license but I could not pass/get my medical certificate, I have put my CDL on hold (don’t remember what it was called -so I don’t have to retake test to maintain CDL) My question is can I borrow the company vehicle and use it for personal use intrastate only without a medical card? A letter I got says can drive up to 26,000 lb. just not sure if that is combo or only straight weight.
@Micheel
Each state is different, so check with your state drivers license department. Personal use of a vehicle that can pull greater than 26,000 would require a cdl, and most states are requiring a valid medical certificate to operate a commercial size vehicle.
I have a F450 and we use it to haul a 14,000 lb trailer. The total combined weight is 24,000 pounds. Do my employees all need medical cards even though no CDL is needed. Also, the company is located in Pennsylvania and some of my employees live in Maryland. If a medical card is needed, which state is it based on? The company state or employee “live in” state? We travel to all states.
Thank You.
@Thomas
You need the medical card because you are using your truck for commerce, but it does not matter what state you have the card done in. Medical cards are good anywhere, unless you are listed as an intra-state only driver.
I’m a current CDL holder from NJ moving to PA. Do I have to take the CDL test again in order to transfer here?
@Tony
That’s a question for PA drivers license department.
This website is not affiliated with any state agency. We are a network of DOT physical doctors and we help drivers with questions related to qualifying for a DOT medical card.
Best of luck with your move.
I bought a 3-ton dump truck. Loaded with 3 ton it is under 10,000. This is a personal vehicle. People keep telling me I need a medical card to drive my own vehicle. Is this true? To drive my own vehicle? Under 10,000 lbs. In PA.
@Sam
Check with your state, but if it is for personal use only, then you may not need a medical card. But if you use the truck to make money with, then you probably need a medical card.
I am currently on workman’s comp. for a torn ACL and I need to update my medical card. I may not be able to preform all requirements to pass. What can I do?
@Michael
Since you would not pass the FMCSA test you will need to wait until you are completely healed and released from your surgeon’s care with a full return to duty letter.
My examiner gave me a 3 month medical clearence in Pa because my A1C was 8.0 was she right since I dont drive the school bus out of state?
@Jerry
If Pennsylvania is following the FMCSA guidelines, then yes she is correct. But you may check with your state drivers license department and see if there is a difference if you are classed as an intra-state only driver.
Just curious. In Pa, what are the penalties for a driver if caught driving without a valid medical certificate?
I have 5 men with CDL’s that work for a municipality and drive vehicles with Gross Wt. of 37600 will they need medical cards
@Mr. Robinson
This is a question you need to check with PennDOT directly.
Live in pa’ question is. I have a ICD’.. Implanted ‘implanted cardio device.. All dot certification.. Facilities say.. I’m automatically disqualified for a medical card’ have you heard of this before ‘? And is it worth applying for a waiver that the state states is not a guarantee ” thank you…!!!
My son is being asked by a potential employer to provide a medical examiner’s certificate showing that he has passed the DOT physical for PA. The employer will assist him to get a CDL about 6 months into his job training. My son is not currently 18 years old, but will be when the CDL permit is sought. The medical doctor is saying the DOT website will not allow her to put in his birthdate as he is younger than 18 years old, so she cannot issue the medical certificate. If the medical certificate is valid for 2 years, does he have to be 18 right now? He will be 18 when he attempts to get the CDL permit. Thanks for any help. Not sure who to contact about this.
@Bethany
Your son can get a valid medical card and medical certificate without being a CDL holder, but he can not get a CDL until he reaches the correct age. (you’ll need to check with your local DLD for the age limit.). All the examiner has to do is complete the examination and indicate on the medical certificate that he passed the examination, but is not a CDL holder. At that point the examiner does not need to try and input the information to the FMCSA data base and can issue a valid medical card to your son.
? 11 total people 10 +1 / GVWR 14050 LBS. Drives intrastate Pa. Only marked with USDOT # 2281242 . Does the driver need a medical card to drive this vehicle ?
PLEASE ANSWER. THANK YOU.
@Phillip
Most states would require that this driver have a medical certificate. Not positive about your specific state. Check with your DLD to confirm or deny that this is the case.
Ive been through inspections in Pennsylvania, , the requirement for a medical card is if you are driving a vehicle GVWR over17,001 pounds. My truck is GVWR at 16,500 pounds,, so i dont need one. But if im driving with a trailer/or something that puts me over with combined weight of 17,001 pounds,, i need a card.
Chris,
Where is this stated at? I am trying to find this exact documentation in order to eliminate out current company policy of requiring medical cards for employees driving vehicles GVWR over 10,001 lbs.
INTERstate is Drivers who operate vehicles in interstate commerce that have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,001 to 26,000 lbs.
INTRAstate is Drivers who operate vehicles in intrastate commerce that have a GVWR of 17,001 to 26,000 lbs
If you click on the link it will explain who does and does not need to file http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/dl_forms/DL-11CD.pdf
The rule is actually curb weight of 10,001 lbs. If your truck or combination is over this you are required to have a Med Cert.
I was a school bus driver for 7 years. I stopped driving in 2011 and sent in the Medical Examiners letter when I received it. In 2014. my liscence is due for renewal in November 2015. The local YMCA needs a bus driver. Do I need to retake my driving test or anything to go back to driving? How can I check if my CDL is still active? I was told by my former employer that I would have to do everything over to be able to go back to work. Thanks for any help you can give me with this.
@Diane
You’ll need to contact your state drivers license department directly, to get these questions answered and be sure your CDL is still active.
Our company has a delivery truck (14,500gvwr) which we use to deliver commercial goods to intrastate customers (Pennsylvania). Do I need to have the drivers obtain a DOT physical card and if so does it have to be submitted to our DMV?
The 14,500 pound truck you describe does not meet the legal standard as either a Commercial Motor Vehicle or a Motor Carrier Vehicle. Used Intrastate , it is not subject to ANY of the USDOT standards.
Unless you haul any Haz-Mat or the goods you deliver were a continuance of an interstate movement.
My father has a medical card about to expire in Sept. He cannot hear very well and sometimes hard to update card every two years. I run a small business with one dump truck at a GVW of 25,500lbs. He has a CDL but I am thinking of down grading to a smaller dump truck so he doesn’t need a medical card .From what I gathered in Pa is anything over 10,001lbs driving in interstate you need one and over 17,001 driving in intrastate you need one. Since all my work is in PA I want to get a truck as close to 17,000 to haul more weight without having him to get a medical card. Does anyone if this info is true or not. I also thin he has to fill out a self- certification form to do this as well. thanks for any help
@Andrew
Each state has different regulations regarding what weight and what license go with what type of vehicle they are driving.
Check with your state DLD to make your final decision.
Correct.
To avoid him being REQUIRED to have a med card…he is ok as long as he stays inside of Pa and doesn’t drive a truck that is over 17,000 lbs. If he were to go outside of PA, his max would be 10,000 lbs.
Don’t forget, trailers count ! A F250 at 8800 lbs plus a 3,000 lb trailer going interstate IS a comm motor vehicle.
@Andy
Thank you for taking the time to help out on PA requirement questions. Much appreciated!
I sent my new Med Cards in via e-mail and recieved a reply back that I would receive a receipt within 15 days in the mail. If I don’t receive my receipt I was informed to call the number provided. I did not receive my receipt after 16 days and when I called the number provided I was told that PennDot has no record of processing it even though I was told they have a three daay turn around on the processing. Has anyone else experienced this problem. I am now trying to find a fax machine and drivers license centers are only open on Thursdays.
My question is that can I still get my CDL back after I have been down graded from a, A to a C for failing to mail in a medical card? Today I tried to transfer my license from PA to WV and I was told I was down graded. I never received a letter or nothing about having to send proof nor did I receive a letter that they down graded it. I have had no Lapse at all in my medical card but they are saying it’s been down graded for almost 6 months. I have been stopped at weigh stations and had my I.D. ran while moving my rig and not 1 time has any officer ever mentioned to me about any of this either.
@the1andonly24
Not sure about your states regs. on this one. In Utah all you have to do is go to the DLD and explain the situation and they will upgrade, once they have a self-certification form completed and a copy of your medical card. So check with your state DLD and see what they want to re-instate your class A.
Pa allows you to ” correct ” this issue but it must be done within 30 days. Your downgrade took you to a Non-Commercial CDL, not a class C regular license.
I would call and confirm this but I don’t think you will get any good news.
I am out on worker comp and will be going thourgh surgery and will not be allowed to return to work until after my mediale card runs out will i still have a class a when i get the word that i can return to my job that is after i get my new mediale card or will i have to take the whole dam test over again where can i find out one way or the other
@Ronald
You need to check with your state Drivers License Department on this one. Once you explain your situation, you should be able to maintain your license and be able to return to a class A without going through the whole testing process again. But it will be up to your state not federal.
What you NEED to do is file a new form DL-11 CDL. With Penndot and change your status to EXEMPT INTERSTATE. You are telling Pdot that you are a medical card expempt driver ( like a gov’t employee). You will no longer need to keep or have a current medical card on file and they won’t take or downgrade your CDL.
But know this….you CANNOT legally drive any vehicle that requires a med card during this time. You are in essence putting your CDL on a shelf and not using it until you can get a new med card.
Once you get a new med card. Go back to Penndot and fill out another DL-11 CDL and change your status back to non-exempt and you are ready to go back and hit he road.
Had four CDL exams in past 2 years, passed all but the last one. Due to neck size wanted a sleep study done. Did show needed Cpap, got all of that done and called doctor that did exam and still will not renew my license. What exactly are the rules for Cpap and getting my CDL approved. Quite the big fella, 6 4. Tried to call many phone #s but not able to talk to anyone. If you have a specific # please send it to me. I
I have been trying to get this done for approx 6 weeks plus now. Job on the line. Need this job as wife is very ill right now and she is unable to work.
I would appreciate any input that you can give me.
thanks
@Kim
This sleep apnea issue is an extensive, and debated subject.
Read this multi-part article on Sleep Apnea and Commercial Drivers to understand the issue, your rights as a driver, and awareness for your health and safety connected to sleep apnea.
is there a list of doctors that are qualified to fill out your medical card,i went to the same doctor that filled it out 2 years ago and faxed it in and got a reply that he wasn’t qualified anymore
My dot card is about to expire I am in pa. If it expires will I have to take my cdl tests all over or get a new card. (Note I’m having health issues and need them resolved so I doubt I can pass as of right now)
I have a dot medical card and just had another exam done in feb. 2014 my old one ran out in 7-2014 , but I forgot and just found out. Am I going to have to take my test and everything over or possiblie pay out money that I don’t have to get back on track
@Tim
You’ll need to check with your State drivers license department to find out the status of your driver’s license/medical card.
Each state differs in the way they handle this type of situation.
I have been out of work as a CDL driver and my medical card just expiered can anything be done for me?
@Kevin
Just go and get a new medical examination and card. If your medical card just recently expired then there should not be any problems.
Submit a copy of your new medical card, together with your self-certification, to your state licensing agency, and you should be good to go.
On June 20,2014, I submitted my CDL DOT MEDICAL CARD TO PENNDOT via fax (7177835429). My current card expires 07/02/2014. I was wondering when and how would I know whether or we received. I can also be reached at (deleted by admin)
i recently got my dot physical, i got no info from dot stating that i had to sent in a copy of medical paper to them. never got paperwork. just when it ran out, that i got that i do not longer have a cdl lisence. i called them and said that it there fault that your mail carrier did not deliver it. i just wonder if they dot can reinstate it. i sent info to the state representative all the infor he told me and he will get it there. so far i have not heard anything. can they reinstate it. physical taken march 18th. i am out of work do to of sending mail out. thought employer would be responsible for it or at least to let you know did you sent it or not. lack of communication
Question is. Do you need a medical card to drive a 10,000 GVW commercial truck like a: box van, F450 or F550 with utility body, dump body, landscape body or chassis.
Thanks,

@ Barry
In the state that I live in, if the vehicle is 10,001 lbs. and/or is being used for commerce, then a medical card is required by law. Check with your DMV to confirm or deny that that is the case in your state.
It is very frustrating that when you call your number, you cannot talk to a real person. The fax is ringing busy…..is there an alternative fax number?
