Nevada CDL Requirements

Nevada law requires all CDL drivers to have a valid DOT medical card, unless the type of commerce you drive qualifies as ‘Excepted’.

If your DOT medical card expires, you will not be qualified to drive a CMV until your DOT medical certificate has been renewed and provided to the Nevada DMV.

Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES

MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS

The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.

The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.

ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

      @ Phil
Cdl’s are state issued, so you need to confirm with your local drivers license department.

II am licensed in Nevada, just turned 73 years, my cdl card was expiring, I was no longer driving, and really did not want to go thru another physical. I went to the Nevada DMV, and was advised I could simply have my physical restriction removed from license, which basically puts your cdl in a coma. But if you want to drive again, just get a new physical, and have the physical restriction placed back on your license, and your good to go. Cost me $12.95 to have restriction from removed, and still have my CDL license, but can’t drive commercially until I get a new physical, and put restriction back on license.

If he is 18 and has a valid drivers license, then he should be good to go.

Best to check with your local drivers license department for guidance. You may need to have a new medical card before you go full on class A driver license, but confirm with your local DLD.

I have a current CDL A (expires in 2025, with medical card that expired May 19, 2020. I have printed the extension letter – yet cannot locate how long this extension is valid for now that things have reopened, and I do want to maintain my valid CDL with medical card.

Can you tell me how long the extensions are good for? And what I need to do to keep my CDL A?
    Thank you!

Check with your state. Most states require a medical card to maintain a valid cdl.

Most states require a valid medical card to drive ANY vehicle that is being used for commerce. Best bet is check with NV and see if they require a medical card to drive a non cdl commercial/company owned vehicle.

This office does medical certification for DOT it’s not the DMV.. I see you have access to some of device to get you on the web. So instead of asking a chiropractor what it takes to switch from a Class B to a Class A, All you have to do is GOOGLE IT : Your class B won’t help you much, other than any experience you have gained in maneuvering a truck if you drove a straight truck or bus.
Two ways you can go to DMV and take your class A test written part after if you have accomplish that then u have the option to take any written endorsements test: air-breaks, passenger, double & triples, tanker/hazmat are now combine. Then you get your CDL learning permit. Rent a tractor to take your road test ( $$$ ??? ). Or go to a school for your class A ( maybe anywhere from $3000 – $5000 ) Final One: find a company that will help you get your permit maybe some endorsements once you are all done then you have to commit to working for that company for a while maybe 5yrs or so. If you leave the company before your time is paid up they will go after for the rest. Say the school cost between $4000/$5000 for you to get your CDL class A with 2 endorsements and it cost the company $4000 to invest in you. Not cheap at all but you would have to stay for 4 yrs still training and u r let loose on the road. You don’t like this company now you are not making enough with this company maybe they are paying ¢.32 a mile or ¢.35 a miles. But you already been there for 2 yrs. and leave. They will sue for the other $2000.00 in small claim court. Because every year you stay is $1000.00 off your bill. U only work 2 yrs and it was to be 4 yrs. 2-4=2: $2000.00.
I heard through other driver that the company doesn’t go after you for the rest and also hear that they go after drivers and if the company wins sometimes they will add court fee what the company paid to take you to court. So your class B License basically means $&@# going towards your class A license. I was just going to tell to google it or look at DMV for CDL which they have there own office in North Las Vegas. Well good luck I went to school for my Class A license plus all the endorsements ( more opportunities )and in 40 yrs living on this planet I never drove a stick / manual transmission that was the HARD PART FOR ME UNTIL IT JUST CLICK ..BUST MY BUT TO GET GOOD AT IT AND NOW THEY ARE GOING WITH AUTO. Depending on what company a lot of them are going automatic transmission. Good luck again, next time don’t ask a chiropractor.

I hold a Class A license in the state of Nevada that expires in 2020. My medical card expired on August 10, 2017. I do not drive a commercial vehicle and don’t plan to, but also don’t want to surrender my commercial license in favor of a regular one. Just in case.

My question is, do I need to carry a current medical card if I am not driving any commercial vehicles? I understand that if I do need to drive a commercial vehicle, I will need to obtain a new card and certify with the Nevada DMV.

      @Carsten
Yes, you need a current medical card on file with your CDL, or else your CDL will be downgraded.

If you are not currently driving a CMV, and you want to maintain your CDL but are not in a position to certify for a medical certificate, or do not want to keep your medical certificate current, check with your SDLA. Your SDLA may allow you to self-certify in a category that does not require a medical certificate, if you state allows it.
