Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

I have a Class A CDL with Haz-Mat endorsements in the state of NM and was just recently disqualified on my medical card. Can I still maintain my CDL with no driving until I get my A1C within the alloted range of 10?
@ DeWayne
You will need to check with your local drivers license department to confirm the maintenance of your cld.
My DOT physical card is about a week past do. I was on vacation in Mexico I have a appointment this week to renew it. What do I need to do to be legal to drive again. I’m in New Mexico
How would a stroke affect my ability to keep my cdl. I drive for the public schools and am exempt.
I am the Fleet Administrator for Bernalillo County. My mechanics are required to maintain CDL’s because they may be required to test drive equipment requiring routine maintenance or repair. Our County provides medical insurance and exams for all CDL operators. Is a separate DOT Medical Exam required in addition to the county medical?
@Dwight
Yes, all commercial drivers are required to have a DOT physical done by an FMCSA certified examiner.
I’m a type 2 diabetic. Recently my doctor placed me on insulin as a non-evasive medication. My doctor gave me a letter for the Medical Examiner stating that I’m under her care and that I can drive a commercial vehicle safely. My medical examiner said that I need a waiver from the federal D.O.T. to be able to drive a commercial vehicle in New Mexico. My job does not include crossing state lines, therefore the federal D.O.T. does not give waivers to intrastate drivers. New Mexico does not participate in waiver programs. NOW WHAT?
Running Out Of Money
@Ralph
First question is what class driver are you?
The examiner should be asking questions regarding the class of your drivers license and since you are an intrastate driver, then all they need to do is indicate that you are an intra-state only driver on your medical card. No federal waiver needed. All this means is that you fall under the states variances and not the Fed. Check with your local drivers license department and confirm this for yourself.
I work for a public school in New Mexico is requiring for me to have a medical card ( I don’t have a CDL license)to drive students to competitions, is not a bus…my left eye is 20/200 I had an injury to my eye when I was five. The provider is asking me for a vision waiver, my question is do I need one? If I do where do I get one?
@Maria
You do not fall under FMCSA guidelines for the type of driving that you will be doing.
So you need to check with your local drivers license department for further information regarding this issue. It will fall under state variances and they should have the vision waiver, if you need one.
My DOT physical has expired due to a sleep test that was to schedule me with in s60 days, that was expired gave me an extension, and still no luck because my insurance denied it , now I am able to get test done, with in two weeks.will make my expiration four week’s. Am I not to operate into my test are done or can I get another extension.
@Alberto
Doubtful for another extension, but worth a try.
My medical card expired 1 week ago. How long do I have to change it, and I can take a picture and email it to MVD. To which website?
@Omar
You cannot drive on an expired medical card.
Each state has a different process for updating this information.
