Nebraska CDL Requirements

The State of Nebraska requires all CDL drivers to have a valid DOT medical card, unless the type of commerce you drive qualifies as ‘Excepted’.

Interstate Non-Excepted
You must meet the Federal DOT medical certificate requirements.

Intrastate Non-Excepted
You must meet the Federal DOT medical certificate requirements.

Effective January 1, 2012 , all individuals holding a Nebraska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are required to certify to the DMV what type of operation they engage in no later than January 30, 2014. In addition, if you operate in Interstate Non-Excepted, you are required to provide the DMV with a copy of your Medical Examiner’s Certificate and keep current with the DMV.

Drivers who cannot meet these requirements or do not wish to retain their CDL can visit any driver licensing office and downgrade their CDL to a Class O (car license). This downgrade must take place by the required deadline in the letter. Failure to provide the appropriate documentation or to downgrade to a Class O license by the required deadline in the letter will result in the cancellation of your CDL.

If you have kept your address current with the DMV, a letter will be sent to you from the DMV between January 1, 2012 and January 30, 2014, requesting you to complete a Self Certification Categories Certificate. You will be required to return this form and any accompanying documentation to the DMV main office by the required deadline in the letter.

If you do not receive a letter from the DMV by December 1, 2013, follow the process below:

Self Certifying with Nebraska Motor Vehicles Driver Licensing Services

  1. CDL Data Form – download the form here from DMV Nebraska.
  2. Copy of your valid DOT medical card (Medical card only, not the long form.) Enlarge the copy to ensure that all information is legible.

In Person:
Bring the documents with you to the DMV Main Office

Keep Your Medical Certificate Current with Nebraska DMV

If you certify as Category A: Interstate and Non-Excepted, it will be your responsibility to keep your medical examiner’s certificate current with the DMV at all times. Please be aware that the Nebraska DMV will not be sending you reminders to keep this information current.

In the future, submit your renewed medical examiner’s certificate (medical card – not long form) to the DMV prior to the expiration of your current medical examiner’s certificate. If you fail to do so, your Commercial Driver License will be cancelled.

Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES

MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS

The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.

The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.

ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

Can a pacemaker stop someone from getting their CDL?

In most cases no, but cdl’s are a state issued document and have different guidelines within each state. Check with your local drivers license department for your best answer.

Due to the war on covid, the feds were giving extensions or grace periods. But it is still best to get the medical certification examination done asap. Things change and usually take longer than expected. And the cards still need to be registered with the state.

    I have a couple questions
1.) Are you required to have a DOT card if you’re driving a taxicab containing no more than 7 passengers in a van including the driver, and 5 people max including the driver in a car
2.) Does having a seizure disorder automatically disqualify you?
3.) If you have a DOT physical done and you leave because of how the physician is treating you and there rudeness. Does that physician report where they passed or denied you to someone other than the company, and is there a way to get a copy of why they denied you?
4.) Could my neurologist complete this form since she knows me and my condition best and has been treating it forever, and has had me on the same medication for over 4 yrs, and I’ve been seizure free even longer or does it have to be a certain doctor?
5.) Is there a way to appeal, reverse, change or get a reconsideration if my neurologist is on board and can send them medical proof that there’s been no seizure activity for years and years since we do EEGS at least yearly. Nothing has showed up forever it seems like. Since my last seizure many many years ago

Oh and I live in Lincoln Nebraska

      @ Anna
All your questions are state related and not DOT/FMCSA, which was established for class A drivers. Check with your local drivers license department for your best answers. Also, if you do have to have a medical certification examination, make sure you inform the examiner that you are not a class A driver and that you fall under your states guidelines and variances. He/she should know the differences, one from the other.

    Sorry one more question
Do you need a DOT card to drive a mini van or car to drive for a taxi service in Lincoln Nebraska. The max amount of people it would hold is 7 including the driver for a van and 5 including the drive with a car. In the state of Nebraska

I have a few questions I live in Nebraska
1 if I have a seizure disorder does that automatically disqualify me?
2 Can my neurologist fill out the exam papers since she knows me and my condition best, and I’ve been with her forever?
    3. If I don’t agree with the first person Igo to, and it’s denied or incomplete because I don’t get along with the doctor doing it because they’re being rude and walk out. Is that record sent somewhere and is there a way to get a copy of if I was denied and if so what there reasoning is
If a seizure disorder does disqualify me is there a way to get around it if I’ve been seizure free for 4yrs, but I’m still on the same meds I’ve been on for close to 4yrs.
Would a recommendation from my neurologist help including the EEGS we’ve done for the last several years that show no seizure activity at all for all those years

If all driving is done intrastate, is a medical certification required?

      @ Kevin B
Most states require a valid medical card for any vehicle that is used for commerce. Interstate and intra-state. Confirm this with your local drivers license department since each state has different rules and guidelines.
