Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

If I can not get my new cdl physical before my old one expires, but get the physical a few weeks late will I be fines or lose my license
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Ted W
Most states are running behind, so it is unlikely you would lose your cdl or be fined. Just get it done ASAP
Kris says
I was asked to drive a ‘party bus’, my medical certificate has expired, Do I have to have the certificate for driving like twice a month.
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Kris
Best to have one, especially if you get stopped by the lawman.
Tim says
If you fail to sign your DOT medical card and the dr doesn’t notice and sends it in and no one ever says anything is your CDL still valid? If not would you still be subject to the mandated pool for random drug/alcohol screening?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Tim
Best answer would come from your states DLD.
Tom says
Isn’t this a federal issue with concern to testing and federally mandated testing protocols?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Tom
The federal government put forth basic guidelines and variances for the CME’s to follow. And regulations that must be adhered to, which left gray areas for interpretation. The CME should know both federal DOT/FMCSA and his states requirements for medical certification. On top of all this, he is supposed to be caring for patients. Unsigned documents are invalid and should be corrected by you and the facility, to avoid further misunderstanding or suspension of your cdl by your state DOT/DLD.
