Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

I have a Montana CDL but haven’t worked in a year. My med card expired soon after. Can I just get an exam for a new card and get my CDL back after not having the card for a year now or will I have a to take the cdl test again? This next card will be my 5th med card.
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Brandon
You will need to check with your local drivers license department for your best answer.
Dyllan says
I have a valid Montana CDL and MEC and just moved. Do I need to update my address on my MEC?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Dyllan
It is helpful to change it, but if both are the same address then it may not be an issue. You know the government, push papers around.
Jo says
Do I need a MEC if I am a NON CDL driver driving a Tractor Only-no load/trailer and do not cross state lines?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Jo
Most states require a MEC if you are driving any vehicle that is used for commerce, making money for someone. Best to confirm with your local DLD.
Charles D says
I currently have a class A cdl license which will expire in February of 2024. My medical exam expired on the 5th of October 2023. I have an appointment on the 18th of October 2023. Will my cdl still be valid and will it still be renewable?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Charles D
Get your physical done and get a copy to DLD as soon as possible following the examination. You should be fine.
Randy L says
I have a cdl but I have not had a medical exam for 4 years. I need to renew my license. Can I have a exam and renew my license and retain my cdl? Thank you.
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Randy L
Go get the medical and take your results straight to your local drivers license department. That way, if they have downgraded your cdl, they see that you are trying to be compliant.
Manny says
I have a CDL that expires in 2024, but my Med card expired in May 2022. If I renew my Med card, is my CDL still valid until the 2024 expiration date?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Manny
Yes.
Savannah says
Can patients see their PCP who is also a CME? Or do they have to see a different CME who doesn’t know the patient because the PCP could be biased?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Savannah
If your PCP is a CME, then by all means use him/her.
Nicole M says
i thought i had another month to renew my dot but it expires today. is there a grace period in mt or will i perminintly loose my cdl, especially if im not driving?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Nicole M
DOT/FMCSA has extended the grace period until the end of August. So you have some time, still recommend you get it done ASAP.
Shane says
If a Montana cdl driver fails his or her dot physical do they still have to pay for it. Also who wrote the law of no nicotine before a dot physical.
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Shane
Yes, you pay for the examiners time and talent, not a test. There is no law about no nicotine before testing, but it does keep blood pressure down.
Sarah says
Hi, I was wondering if you know how long a new driver for a CDL has to be on a CPAP machine in order to pass the DOT medical if they are just starting treatment.
Thank you
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Sarah
30 day minimum and 90 day at the most, with a 30 day readout demonstrating a 70 % compliance.
Candi B says
I’m trying to check to see if you received my new DOT physical form Dr Matt Stanley for Candi B drivers license number ___.
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Candi B
Contact your local drivers license department for this information.

Trucker Docs™ says
@ Adam

Jamie says
We have a CDL driver who has a Montana CDL license, he drives in ND and renewed his DOT medical card in ND, do I need to email a copy of his DOT medical card to Montana’s DOT? ND’s DOT said I don’t send it to them, but to Montana’s DOT, is this correct? If so do you have the address or email address to send a copy to?
Thank you!
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Jamie
Copy of medical card is sent to Montana, that is correct.
malcolme b says
my wife has a valid NC cdl and medical exam card still valid she wants to transfer cdl to a Montana licence does she have to have a fresh physical if her NC one is still valid ?
Tina says
I was just wondering if you can get a montana cdl or pass a montana dot physical while perscribed the medication suboxone?
Daniel W says
My CDL expired in May and I have to get it renewed. Will I still require a DOT physical?
Trucker Docs™ says
@Daniel
Not if you have a current medical card.
Cheri says
I currently have a Class B license, and I no longer drive for a living. But I do not want to loose the CDL status, just in case. Do I still have to do a DOT physical, which now cost $140? If and when I need it again, I can have the employer pay for the DOT physical. I understand that I will need to have it when my license renews correct?
Thank you
Trucker Docs™ says
@Cheri
Your license will be downgraded if you don’t keep your medical card current.
Some DOT doctors charge a lot less than $140 for a DOT physical.
Your local drivers license department may allow you to change your self-certification to an “excepted” category while you are not driving, so you won’t need a medical card: Then before you start driving commercially again you will have to change to “non-excepted” and get new medical certification.
Loren S says
is there a grace period for getting your medical card i need to see my eye doctor and I’ll be 30 day over my expired date
Trucker Docs™ says
@Loren
There is no grace period. You cannot drive on an expired medical card.
As far as downgrading your license, each state has a different time period and process, so contact your local drivers license department and see what they have to say.
Bobbie says
Question I have a montana only cdl with a vision waiver montana type 2 medical certificate is it possible to get a dot card? The company I work for is a federal motor vehicle carrier and the won’t except my montana medical type 2 vision montana only intrastate Can u please help
Trucker Docs™ says
@Bobbie
If you have a cdl and you drive intra-state only with the vision waiver, then you should already have a medical certificate. If the company is having an issue with what you have, then you need to check with the company to see what their policy is so you can adjust your license accordingly. Your dot card is the same thing as a medical certificate. So we are not sure of the question. If you can clarify the question a bit we will try to help.
