Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

CAN I DRIVE WITH MY A1c between 10- 12% IN ANY STATE
@Kevin
Normals are around 5 and if it is higher it usually implies that the condition is not under control. If you are spilling sugar into your urine at the time of testing, then you will not qualify as a CMV operator. You may check with your state, if you are an intra-state only driver, and see what they have to say.
What is the grace period after my physical has expired to get them back on my license
@ Billy
Your card expires at midnight of the expiration date. No such thing as a grace period according to the FMCSA, yet some state are running behind on getting the information into their dat base. So check with your state, but DOT has no grace period, unless you run into a nice guy.
Is there a grace period to have your new DOT card added to your license? Mine expired fri. I renewed it Friday but license place was closed by time I got out there?
I think its terrible that Mississippi is charging to send the medical card in online. Other states allow you to fill out a form and scan your card and email it free of charge.
My medical card has expired. How long do I have before I can no long have CDL reinstated ? I do not drive for a living now but like to kept CDL
What do I do with the long firm (medical exam report) once it given to me by the dr?
@Randy
Put it in a safe place and keep it there. If you change employers or lose your medical card, the long form will help you until you can get a new/duplicate certificate.
Does a class D MS Driver Licence require a medical card?
@ drh1960
It all depends on what you are going to be driving and for who. If the vehicle is being used for commerce and has company names on the vehicle, then yes. If not, then no.
what if you cross state lines?
@ Daniel
Then you’ll be in another state.
Do school bus and church cdl drivers have to have a medical card?
@Randall
Check with your state DLD.
If you have a CDL, then more than likely, you would need a valid medical card. But each state is different so check with them for a final confirmation.
