Maine CDL Requirements

All CDL holders in the State of Maine are required to have a valid DOT medical card.

Failure to keep Medical Certification current will result in disqualification from non-excepted interstate operation and downgraded to an excepted status. On January 30, 2014, all CDL holders who are non-compliant will be downgraded to a non-commercial driver license.

Interstate Non-Excepted
You must meet the Federal DOT medical certificate requirements.

Intrastate Non-Excepted
You must meet the Federal DOT medical certificate requirements.

Important: All CDL holders must complete the self-certification form by Jan. 30, 2014. If you renew or change your CDL before Jan. 30, 2014, you will be asked to comply at the time of the renewal or change.

Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES

MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS

The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.

The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.

ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

We have a couple new hire class C non cdl drivers coming on board. Do they require a med cert card on their persons if they are in state only and within 100 air miles?

Most states require a valid medical card for any driver who is driving a vehicle that is used for commerce, to make money for someone/or self. Best to confirm with your local DLD for their requirements.

Bunch of BS! All this is so that Businesses can get an insurance break and is causing drivers like me to hang up the keys after 33 yrs of CDL driving.

Does the doctor have to use the test result from the day of the exam or can they base the decision on a test done a month prior?

I have blood work done every three months as part of my ongoing tests for cancer. The BP they used was from December 23 last year. Neither BP the day of my cdl testing were used.

That makes absolutely no sense. DOT/FMCSA, BP’s are to be taken and read/recorded at the time of examination.

Thing is that wasn’t the case. I have nobody to back me up. I have three days of my time into this. The state, two high profile doctors in Bangor and others all say that I was done wrong.

We agree. CME’s are to use the day of examination bp’s.
Anything else is unacceptable by DOT/FMCSA guidelines.

I had a dot renewal at Eastport health care in Machias maine. The doctor denied my test for high blood pressure. My two tests that day of the test were 131/81 and 114/78. Both of these are exceptable under maine laws. I wore a blood pressure monitor for 24 hrs. The results were 120/78. I asked the lead doctor at Eastport health care to forward the results to the dot doctor. I was
Told I would have to do the whole exam over again. Any body straighten this out for me?

Both of the readings were within the DOT/FMCSA requirements. DOT/FMCSA indicates that once a drivers leaves the examination, he/she must be re-tested/full physical. Go else where for your next test.

I feel I was treated unfairly and want to do something about it. I passed the blood test in flying colors with 120/78 after wearing the cuff for 24 hrs.

I have a driver with Medical Certificate from CT, with a different Drivers License # on it, can he still use this in the state of Maine, or does he need to have another physical?

Probably best if medical card and license are the same. DOT may not accept the discretion.

Most states require a valid medical card to operate any vehicle that is used for commerce. Confirm this with your local drivers license department.

If you’re not currently in a driving job do you need to maintain a medical certificate to keep your class A?

No. The medical certification and the state issued license are independent of each other. You will have to get a renewed med cert if you wish to drive again. You are not legal until you do, also, be sure to send the scanned copy of your new card along with the self certification form to your appropriate state agency. You can find that information with a simple Google search.
