Indiana Commercial Drivers License
Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

Is a DOT medical card required for Intrastate only, non-CDL <26000lb box truck driver in Indiana?
@ Rich A
All states have different guidelines and regulations. Best to confirm with your local drivers license department.
Is a medical card required if you only drive 60 mi from your own base
And it’s all intrastate
@ Ron G
Most states require you to carry your card with you when ever you drive. It’s only ‘really’ important when you get stopped by a police officer or DOT officer.
if I have a indiana cdl & it doesn’t expire but I don’t want to have a cdl license anymore do I have to get a regular license or can I keep my license just can’t use the cdl part of it.
@ Deb
Every state has different guidelines and requirements. Best to check with your local drivers license department for the most appropriate answer to your question.
My medical examiners certificate expired in February. I thought I had 1 year before I had to retest. The Indiana BMV has given 3 people 3 different answers on when my CDL will be taken if I don’t submit a new certificate. According to Indiana BMV, the fmcsa determines the length of time before your CDL is taken completely. They told me 1 year, my wife 6 months before a written test is required and 5 years before I need to start all over and they told one of her drivers he had 180 days and had to surrender his CDL since he lapsed.
Who determines this and what is the right answer?
@ Rocco
CDL is a state issued document and is under the states control, not FMCSA. To avoid further complications, if you want to keep your cdl, get a new medical done and get it to your states DLD. If you don’t want to keep your cdl, then go to DLD and downgrade, before they do it for you.
My dot physical for Indiana has expired. How long do I have until they suspend my license?
@ Pam
DOT/FMCSA has extended your time period to the end of February. Got get it done now and get the paperwork registered with your state.
Is there an email address to send medical examination form to for Indiana?
@ John F

My cdl medical expired on 08/19/2021 I have been out of the country since 07/06/2022 I get back on 09/29/2021. Can I just renew my medical or do I have to retest?
@ Niko
Check with your local drivers license department. In most cases all you need is to update your medical card, but confirm that with your state.
Yes . This happened to me. All you have to do is print out the cell physical form or ask the BMV to Print you one out.
Take it when you Go get a CDL Physical and turn the completed paperwork into the BMV. And they will update it in the system.
If your CDL License was suspended. It will reinstate once it’s uploaded into the system.
I hope this helps
Does indiana have medical card hotline anymore.
To verify status of medical card?
@ William
You need to check with your states drivers license department.
Does the state of Indiana require all CDL drivers to get an A1C test?
@ Jill T
CDL’s are state issued and they have their own rules and regulations. It is not a mandatory DOT/FMCSA requirement, but can be requested by the CME is he/she has questions.
