Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

Waiting to get an appointment. How long after dot medical card expired do I have to get it done? This is for non-cdl. Thanks.
@ Jeff
It is more about employment, not requirements. You can get it done when ever you want, but your job will need it for you to drive legally for them.
Can I renew my CDL medical certificate 20 days after the expiration date? What happens to my cdl license?
@ JON B
Yes, and go get it done ASAP, then get a copy of your new medical card to your local DLD right away. That will stop any action that would effect your cdl.
Is there a grace period once your dot certificate expires?
@ Leticia N-S
No. Grace periods for covid are over. Your medical card expires at midnight of the date of expiration.
I currently obtain a CDL in the state of Hawaii, but my current profession doesn’t require my CDL is there anything I can do to put my CDL on hold until I need it so I don’t need to do medical Examinations regularly?
@ Keoni
You would need to check with Hawaii drivers license depart for the correct answer.
My Medical Card has expired and I am trying to get a sleep apnea test done. It has been 30 days since it expired but I am having difficulty getting an appointment for the testing. I guess there are so many needing o do this test since it was implemented.
My question is: How long can I go without renewing my medical card before I am either downgraded to type C or lose my CDL?
@ Zilpah K
Your last medical card expired 30 days ago, so now it is a question for your local drivers license department to answer.
I have my CDL-class A from Texas and my medical card expire in March 2018, right now I am here in Hawaii, my question is. May I do a medical exam here and send to Texas? They accept? Thanks
