Is Meniere’s disease a disqualifier?
Yes. Meniere’s disease is disqualifying because it may bring about a severe condition of vertigo and is unpredictable. The risk here is sudden incapacitation.
What if I’ve had surgery for Meniere’s disease?
Still is a disqualifier. The FMCSA is reviewing this in terms of certification.
Does vertigo disqualify me from getting a medical card?
It could. When the medical examiner does his examination, one of the things he is looking for is things that would be unsafe for you as a driver and how it effects your ability to maintain control of a commercial motor vehicle. Part of that examination is to test for virtigo. If he feels the condition is unsafe then he will not pass you. If he feels there is something that can help you maintain, he may make a suggestion for you to follow-up with a specialist.
Drivers who have had one unprovoked seizure by definition do not have epilepsy (2 or more unprovoked seizures). Drivers who are seizure-free and off anticonvulsant medication(s) for at least 5 years after a single unprovoked seizure can be certified. Earlier return to work may be considered for drivers with a normal EEG who have no epileptic-form activity and normal examination by a neurologist specializing in epilepsy. What if I take anti-seizure medication?
Right off the bat you would be disqualified as a CMV driver. There is a new federal exemption for seizure and related medications. You will need to check with the FMCSA regarding that particular paperwork.
Medical history or clinical diagnosis of epilepsy is disqualifying. Where a driver can demonstrate that safety would not be diminished by the condition, it is possible to apply for an exemption.
Can I pass a DOT physical after having a stroke?
It depends on many things, including the likelihood of having another stroke. Your best bet is to first go back to your neurologist and have him/her write a medical opinion letter stating:
- When you had the stroke.
- What was the treatment, and how successful was the outcome.
- What is the treatment you are receiving now.
- The doctor’s medical opinion about your readiness to return to work as a driver. Make sure that he/she knows all of your physical daily activities as a commerial driver.
With that information in hand when you go to do your DOT medical examination, then the DOT examiner has all the appropriate information to determine your physical state of fitness to perform the duties of a commercial driver.

Well, it isn’t that you fail outright, but you will be asked questions regarding the condition:
- What treatment routine has been established.
- How long you’ve been on that routine.
- How are you responding to treatment/medication, etc.
So just prepare for the question line in advance, bring documentation from your treating doctor with you, and you could do just fine.
If I take antidepressants can I still get a DOT medical card?
Well it’s not impossible, but what you will need to do is get a medical opinion letter from your treating physician that states:
- When you were diagnosed with the condition?
- What treatment program does he/she have you on?
- Is the condition stable?
- Does your physician feel you could do the duties of a commercial driver and be safe for yourself and the people/public around you?
Then take that information the DOT physical appointment. It will still be the DOT medical examiner’s decision whether or not to certify you.
I have an anxiety disorder on and off. This raises my BP readings. Can I still pass the DOT physical if I take beta-blockers?
You should talk with your primary healthcare provider to determine whether or not this would interfere with the responsibilities and stress of being a commercial motor vehicle operator. If your doctor feels OK about your driving and understands the role of a commercial motor vehicle operator, then he should write a medical opinion letter for you to take to the DOT examination, explaining your condition, treatment and safe usage of the medications you are taking and whether your specific condition is stable. That way there is no surprises for you or the DOT examiner.

I contracted Meningitis in February. I was in the hospital for 1 month and released with no problems. My doctor gave me a letter to be able to return to work with no issues. My employers sent me to have a DOT physical and I was denied my card and I was told that I could not drive commercial for1 year. Is there anything that I can do about this? Can I appeal this? Please Advise.

Your medical examiner is very precautious and reading a lot into the DOT/FMCSA guidelines. There is a bit of a risk factor that could occur. Best opinion is a second opinion from another CME. Also, thing very between class A cdl’s and lesser class cdl’s.
I have a FND functional Neurological Disorder with PNEE ( psychological non epileptic events). I am under a neurologist but are uncertain if this disqualifies me from returning to my CDL B job as a school bus driver? I’m not on any medications for it and have had two clear EEG done.

You need to check with your local drivers license department (DLD) for their guidelines and restrictions. As a class B driver you are under their guidelines and not federal DOT/FMCSA.
My wife and I were arguing and I sarcastically said do have to shoot myself in the head so I don’t hear you. She called the police and had me Baker acted, the Medical Examiner disqualified me. 1 year and I can go back is this true?

It will take a letter from your shrink, along with a medical release form, before you could pass a DOT/FMCSA medical for a class A cdl.
I have been diagnosed with menier’s disease, am I still able to pass a DOT physical with a doctors note?

I verbally stated that I have some Neuropathy in my hands and feet to a DOT examiner and failed my. I have not been actually diagnosed that I know of, I just have some numbness at times in my hands and feel like I am walking on pebbles with my feet. My Oncologist and regular doctor have said it is probably Neuropathy from getting chemo treatments and stem cell transplant in the past. This can be a reason to fail me?

Yes, this could be reason enough to fail you. The CME should be doing more specific testing or requesting additional information from your physicians.
I have an Indiana Class A Interstate CDL. September 23, 2022 I had brain surgery to remove a benign Meningioma tumor. While finding no restriction of minimum return to work time I became free of Keppra, cleared by my neurologist, and my neurosurgeon in 5 months. When my company sent me in for my fresh med card someone kicked back to my company Dr the next day saying I need one year minimum without issue. I cannot find any sources online to support this, and my company is supposedly working on a solution to this. Would I benefit to drop the class A or interstate designations and fall under a different set of circumstances?

Class A cdl, you would need to have a waiting period according to the DOT/FMCSA guidelines. That being said, get your cdl shifted to intra-state only. That way you fall under the states guidelines and variances and not federal DOT.
I was diagnosed with mild degenerative disk disease and I have Peripheral Neuropathy in my feet, with shooting nerve pains in feet. I received a few Epidurals in my lower back a couple years ago and no longer have nerve pain but still numbness in both feet. Is this a disqualifier for a class B CDL for straight truck

Since you are going for a class B cdl, you will fall under your states guidelines and variances. Best to confirm with your local drivers license department. The requirements for a class A are stricter than the states.

If this condition does not effect your abilities to perform the duties of a class A driver, then it will simply be monitored on a yearly basis, most likely.

I just been diagnosed with anxiety. The doctor just started me on medications. How long do I have to be on medications and not have had an anxiety attack to pass a DOT physical?

30 days on the medication to rule-out negative side effects. By that point you should have your expected results, no attacks.
I had 2 AVM – one in the cerebellum and one in temporal lobe in 2018. I had AVM embolized in cerebellum and 10 coils in the temporal lobe AVM. I was cleared with MRI. I had another MRI in 2019 and got my DOT physical. That physical expired in 2020 and due COVId 19 I didn’t work from Jan 2020 until now. I would like to get my Class B CDL back . Will I need an MRI to pass the dot physical?

Class B cdl’s fall under the states requirements, so check with your local DLD for guidance.

The CME will have to determine if the tremors are a risk factor. He/she may also request additional supporting documentation.
I had a stroke 4 years ago. After not being able to get my DOT medical card for a year I was able to go back to driving. Now I have to recertify every year. I was told that I need to get a letter saying that I’m clear to drive now after I’ve been clear to drive for years. Why do I need to go back to a Neurologist for this again if I’ve been cleared to drive years ago and have had DOT exams every year since? Or do I need to go somewhere else?

Much of the DOT/FMCSA guidelines in open for interpretation by the CME. Get a second opinion. You may still be ask to provide a release form from your neurologist.

It increases a little when I get excited. This happens almost never or very little in a calm and normal state. A problem for the DOT exam?

Hi so how do I report a truck driver annoymously he lied about having sleep apnea and he’s os bipolar and SCHITZO affective and is supposed to be on meds but he quit his family doesn’t seem to care but he is doing things that are really weird and I think hes a danger driving because I believe he’s using drugs instead of his medication which with all of those things he completely dangerous to be on the road
DOT driver with dx Hydrocephalus. VP shunt place 8/30/2022. Clearance from neurosurgeon on file stating he is safe to drive CMV. Is there a waiting period after shunt placement? The DOT Medical Examination book contradicts itself. On page 182, it says that hydrocephalus is automatically disqualifying, but on page 216 states if no neurological symptoms can be cleared on an individual basis.

It falls to your discretion and your overall findings from the physical, mental and emotional evaluation. When all is said and done do you feel safe to ride with the driver, if so then he can be cleared. You may want to monitor on a yearly basis.
If I am diagnosed with BPPV does that disqualify me from driving a cmv? If so is there a symptom free time frame for returning to work? The only thing I have found is a report from 1988 that says it is a disqualification and requires 2 months symptom free. Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you can provide supporting documentation that you are symptom free and have been for at least 2 months, then the CME should take the information into consideration. Then he/she must take all other information and examination findings through their decision making process. It comes down to risk factors for you as a driver and the public at large.
How long is certification for patient with multiple sclerosis? Getting clearance from pts neurologist but was not sure how long she is able to be certified for if cleared. Thank you 🙂

It will depend on your comfort level given the drivers condition. Very slow progression of the drivers condition would allow for a 2 year card. If you want to monitor more closely, a one year or less certification.
