Colorado CDL Requirements
All Colorado CDL holders are required to be medically qualified to drive a CMV by the means of a valid DOT medical certificate or medical waiver.
The regulations require that your motor vehicle status be “Medically Certified” to drive a CMV. This status will be controlled by the expiration date of your DOT Medical Certificate that you submit to the DMV. If your DOT Medical Certificate is expired, then you will have a Medically Certified status of “Not Certified” and you cannot legally drive a CMV.
On the first day of your DOT Medical Certificate expiring, you are no longer qualified to operate a CDL type CMV.
On the 10th day of the DMV not receiving an updated DOT Medical Certificate, the DMV will change your medical certification status to “Not Certified” and the DMV will also mail out a letter to you explaining that you cannot operate a CDL type CMV and what you need to do to comply.
On the 30th day of the DMV not receiving an updated DOT Medical Certificate, the DMV will cancel your entire license and at this point you have no driving privileges.
Interstate Non-Excepted

Intrastate Non-Excepted

Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

My DOT DR, told me I need a stress test from a cardiologist. he gave me 45 day card. I cannot see Dr. for 2 months. Also having knee surgery in a month. If don’t see a Cardio Doc before my
surgery I won’t get My card. What can I DO? Is their anything
@ Bruce J
You are going to need a new medical exam following your knee surgery. Better to wait until you are released to return to work before getting a new med card. Check with your local DLD, let them know your situation and they can guide you through their process to keep your cdl until you have your new med card.
I just got diagnosed with Apnea but CPAP s are six months out dr says he wont give me a dot until I get a week on cpap
@ Dennis D N
If you are a class A driver, the CME will need a 30 day readout with a 70% usage/compliance. Lesser class cdl’s may fall under different requirements in your state.
I had lasik surgery on both my eyes in 2003 i have one for distance and one for up close . Now you are making me wear a glass on my up close eye and its massing it up to wear glass to drive never had this probably before. I had a letter from my eye doctor. So why did they change the regulation i already pay for my dot medial and license and know have to pay for another license because you made me have to put on a restriction!
How can i change this so it does not mess up my surgery
@ Daralis B
DOT/FMCSA requires a 20/40 or better in both eyes and in each eye. That’s the fed who messed you up, not the CME. No changes in the regulations for many years on this issue. Wear the glasses to pass the medical exam and drive as you would normally, keep corrective lenses close at hand.
I lost my wallet I ordered a new license Can i print a copy of my medical card which is still valid
@ Roland K
If you have access to your medical card, then yes.
I haven’t had a seizure in almost 10 years but I take anti seizure medication will I still be able to obtain a CDL license?
@ Jim
Since your cdl is a state issued document, you need to talk with your local DLD for guidance.
Do I need an appointment to submit my dot physical medical card to dmv in Pueblo?
I wasn’t paying attention to dates and my Cdl was cancelled due to expired medcard. I just got an updated med card, if I submit to the Colorado dmv should that suffice the cancellation ?
@ Kiki
It’s possible, but confirm with your local DLD.
I just retired in Colorado did not get my physical and was going to wait to renew my license as it expired March 2023 got the message they cancelled my entire license can I just get a regular license as I don’t need or want the CDL anymore
@ Casey
Most likely, but confirm with your local drivers license department.
