CDL Holders (non-excepted):

  • You no longer need to carry a physical medical card with you, and you no longer have to go through the hassle of updating it with California DMV.
  • When your DOT medical exam is completed, the examining office is required to electronically transmit your results to FMCSA’s National Registry database.
  • FMCSA’s automated process transmits your results to California DMV to update your CDL motor vehicle record.

If your CDL record does not reflect ‘Medically Qualified’ status, your CDL will be downgraded within 60 days.

California Non-CDL Drivers:

  • Make sure you get a physical copy of the medical certificate, Form MCSA-5876, from the examiner’s office.
  • You still need to keep the paper medical card available whilst driving a commercial motor vehicle.
