Special Information Updates Pertaining To ALL STATES
MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

Is the medical exam for a DOT medical card the same for those getting their CDL as it is for someone driving only large SUV’s and Mercedes passenger vans? I don’t even need a CDL permit or license so is the exam and it’s standards the same?
@ Andrea R M
Your medical card examination is not the same as a class A cdl holders. You fall under your states rules and regulations, not Federal DOT/FMCSA. Make sure your medical examiner knows the difference.
Do I have any length of time to renew my health card so I don’t have to retake the CDL test
@ Tim
That information would come from your local DLD, confirm with them.
one year after that you have to retest for your cdl.
Renewed my dot card Aug 10th but didn’t submit it. What happens now?
How can I check my CDL medical certificate expiration date online?
@ Karamjit
You should be able to look in your wallet or file with your medical certificate in it and see the expiration date on your copy of the certificate itself.
Apple Wallet does not show this information either and it would be great if this information was available on MVD site somewhere. Yes we can always look at the paper medical certificate as well but was looking for online option if one available.
@ Karamjit
The only other option, maybe, will be the your local drivers license department online. Check with them and see if they have a process that answers your question.
My medical for my CDL expires two day after my physical is there a grace period.
@ Bob
If you act on this ASAP, you will probably be fine. But, confirm this with your states drivers license department.
I have experienced this before. If you can’t get you physical done before your expiration date, as long as you don’t drive a commercial vehicle until you do, you can still drive a car. If it takes longer than expected to get your physical done, you can downgrade to Class D, and then upgrade to A when you’re ready.
@ Steve D
We would recommend you confirm this statement with your local drivers license department. Most states have a time limitation from class A downgrade to reinstating your A cdl.
I currently hold a Ohio class A CDL without a medical card. What will I have to do to transfer my CDL to Arizona. If I have no intention of using my CDL at this time, will I still be required to obtain a medical card?
@ Angela
Each state has different guidelines and requirements. This questions should best be answered by Arizona DLD.
If my CDL is lost or stolen can I get a duplicate/copy of my CDL drivers license without a medical card to drive my personal vehicle which doesn’t require a commercial drivers license ?
@ David H
This will be best answered by your local drivers license department, since cdl’s are state issued not federal.
As long as you don’t drive a commercial vehicle, you can downgrade to a class D to be able to drive a car. As long as you don’t give up your CDL or get a DOT physical, you can always upgrade back to the Class A.

We would recommend you confirm this statement with your local drivers license department. Most states have a time limitation from class A downgrade to reinstating your A cdl.
