MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

@ Richard DeB
Most likely it all passed in the travel time. Confirm with your local DLD. Most states are running 2 to 6 weeks behind in getting your information into their data base.
Jack S says
Medical cards need to expire on the actual date and not the date of the new physical. They should be continually good from the initial issue date.
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Jack S
It is do-able, just have your DOT/FMCSA examination done on the day before your old card expires.
Ashly says
My husband never reviewed his medical card for his cdl because at the time he did not need it and it was going to cost 150 in the town we lived and at that time we just couldnt afford it so he let it expire. Anyway he is now looking at a cdl job and is curious will he have to retake the cdl class all over or just get a new medical card?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Ashly
Check with the states drivers license department for your answer.
Chris says
If your dot physical card expires. When you get it renewed is you cdl still valid or do you have to redo the cdl test?
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Chris
Check with your local DLD for a solid answer. In most cases, no you do not have to redo the cdl test. Confirm with your state.

Are we allowed to tape or laminate our DOT physical cards? My friend from Oregon says “No”
Trucker Docs™ says
@ Helen
As long as the DOT officer can read all of the medical cards information, it should not be an issue. And that being said, DOT officers will see it their way, if they want to. Check with your local DOT office for the best answer.
Alex says
Do you have to have the physical done in the state of Wyoming or can you get it done in another state?
Ann says
I know someone who lies on there DOT medical, he goes to a clinic instead of his regular Dr so he doesn’t have to report he takes blood pressure meds, bipolar meds & has sleep apnea. How & were do you report this? And are these even things that matter as long as he can be cleared by the clinic?
Trucker Docs™ says
@Ann
All of these issue need to be addressed by the CME. You could report it to the FMCSA and let them do what they will.

you shouldn’t ruin the man’s career and likelihood because of that. try talking to him first n help him find another form of income before you cost him his license and career. I understand both sides right n wrong n still think he deserves the chance to determine if he is safe or not to drive. look at how many regular people still drive with those issues n r fine. don’t get high n mighty cause he drives a truck.

I have a CDL but do not drive a truck. I own a pilot car business and drive a pilot car. When I renewed my license in 2012, I presented my DOT physical long form as required and my license was renewed. I did the same in 2014 with my long form. I just went to renew my CDL as it expires at midnight on my birthday in a few days and was told my license has been suspended and had been since 2013. Wyoming claims they notified me and I never received any letters until I was given copies today. It was quite unnerving to find out I have been driving with a suspended license for the past 3 years and I am not understanding why when Wyoming has two current copies of my DOT physical from 2012 and 2014. What do I do here? My Pilot car work is all I have to support my family.
Trucker Docs™ says
@Maureen
You’ll need to go to your local drivers license department to sort this out.
Each state treats this process differently and has different time frames and rules for reinstating a drivers license. It may be as simple as getting a new medical card and paying a reinstatement fee. You also need to check that DMV has the correct mailing address for you so any problem does not fall through the cracks.

The medical facility where I live says I need to have “blood work” done within the last 12 months
before they will make an appointment for a DOT physical. I have never had to do that before and I can not find that requirement anywhere on your website.
Please let me know if this is true or not.
Thank you
Trucker Docs™ says
@Chuck
Blood work ups for what conditions? Not enough information here to answer your question. No CME is going to require a blood work up unless there are other things going on. There is nothing in the FMCSA, unless there is needed information about an ongoing condition.
Slade Ross says
I am a commercial drive as well as a pilot. Please consider accepting each others medicals. Especially now that I am taking blood pressure medication. I think it is silly to require both not to mention a new one every year just because of well regulated blood pressure. Please use some common sense here. Thank you.
Dave Walton says
I have a commercial drivers license for over 45 years but no longer drive commercial but would like to keep my C D L just incase I would have to help out a friend or relative.. My problem is that last year when my medical was done we had some thing going on where my blood pressure was a little high, try different Medes etc. I was told I would have to get a new medical this year and am wondering if I can send in copies of blood pressure test as I have had a surgery and several tests and has never been high. This is expensive to get a new physical! I was also told but another person with a C D L that if you are not driving commercial you do not need the medical card until you start driving again. Is this true and is there anything I can do to avoid another physical. I can send in several blood pressure tests if this would help or get a note from one of my Doctor .
Thank you
Dave

@Dave
Check with Wyoming DOT and see if they’ll let you self-certify as “excepted intrastate” as long as you are not driving. This may be a way to not have the expense of a medical card. See more information in this blog post on Self-Certification.
Or, you must meet the blood pressure requirements to qualify for a medical card. See FAQ – Blood Pressure and Hypertension.
